Updates are where LG fall down, sorry but leaving stuff without security patches is unacceptable. It's a pity because I actually like a lot of their devices and I used an Optimus 7 back in the day.

With the V60 announcement in a couple of weeks are we likely to see an NZ release?

Unlikely - the V-series is now exclusive to 5G markets.

I'm quite enjoying the G8S, the Air Gestures are much more fun and useful than expected.

Are we not a 5G market now with Vodafone?

I am happy to stick with my V30 for a while yet (still performing well approaching two years of daily use) but I am curious to know how people who have used a V30 and newer LG phone compare the sound quality in headphone use with the Hi-Fi DAC. I expect the V40 would be at least as good as the V30, but is the G8s a step down in quality?

That gets a bit complicated. We don't yet know if Voda will allow 5G-capable devices outside of their own portfolio to access 5G from launch. This has not been the case with the UK 5G launch, but UK operators have progressively opened up to BYO 5G devices a while after.

For a 5G-capable V60 to become available in NZ, it is most likely that Voda would need to pick it up, and they have not ranged LG in some time - although I would certainly be happy if they did.

I need to test the G8S against the G7/V30+/V40 with higher impedance wired headphones, but so far I have been surprised by how good the G8S' output is given it's using Qualcomm's Aqstic solution instead of an ESS Sabre DAC. A colleague who's a devout fan of the G-series and uses high-end IEMs has thus far had no complaints in switching from the G7 to the G8S. I find a good amp can be just as important.

Thanks for that. I got the V30+ in a bundle from PB Tech that included Sennheiser HD 599 headphones. They are one of the pairs I use directly with the phone. If a G8S drives them about as well, it or a V40 would at this stage be my choice to replace the V30+ whenever that may happen. Not likely this year unless it breaks though.

Requested thread unlock to ask for suggestions for an Android phone replace my LG V30+.

It is a few months away from reaching the milestone of three years of daily use, and still working very well. The battery drains a little faster these days, but it retains ample charge for my needs. I have no immediate plan to replace it until it stops working, which could be quite some time away, but I'd like to have one or two firm ideas of possible replacements ready. Something I can buy from a store in NZ, ideally.

The main features of the V30+ I like are its size, always-on screen, and Hi-Fi DAC. A phone that can match the V30+ for wired headphone sound would be preferred, but I'd consider getting something like an iFi hip-dac otherwise.

I'd be interested to learn what other V30+ owners are using now.

Where did people by the G8 from? I was looking for a thread to query my G7's battery life, it seemed to have taken a nose dive, but yesterday I barely used bluetooth and still had three quarters batter full, normally I'm down to less than a fifth. This is my first non user replaceable battery phone. Normally I would buy extra batteries and swap them out.

I do not know of any shop that ever sold the G8 in NZ, but for a while PB Tech was selling the larger G8S.

I have a G7. The only problem that I've had with battery life has been due to specific applications. Battery life would take a nose dive so I would check battery usage by app to see which app was the problem. This would be consistent with battery life generally being too low but sometime the same as it used to be.

Does anyone know if the LG Velvet is coming to NZ?

I would be interested in the Velvet if it was available here. And, still keen to hear what any former LG V30 owners are using now.

I thought for a minute that I'd jinxed my V30+ by reviving this thread - it started malfunctioning a few minutes ago, with presses barely registering on the right hand side of the screen. But after a reboot it's working just fine. The three years of daily use milestone is still in sight...
