Many thanks, @NikT for an awesome post. Really like that Mate bundle tbh. My only worry is if the sideload google ever got blocked.

Same here, the Mate 30 looks amazing but it is the thought of Google being blocked down the line that makes me hesitant too.

To my mind there'll always be enterprising people wanting a way around that; it would be difficult for Google to justify a block given the side-loading method is user-driven; and there are always custom ROMs to fall back on as a last resort.

Always happy to share what I can. The Mate 30 Pro has flown under the radar a little in NZ as we were actually the first English-speaking country to launch the product, ahead of AU and well ahead of the UK which just launched this week, so it was a bit sensitive at the time in November last year. Good ol' NZ test market factor.

I see a block as comparatively unlikely. On the face of it, Google wants more customers using its services, and would 100% have supported this and future Huawei products were they not restricted from doing so. Hopeful this will be resolved in time. Huawei meanwhile are full steam ahead with HMS and with enough support this could build out ok.

Unfortunately custom ROMs have been a no-go on Huawei kit for a while, they discontinued their bootloader unlock programme circa P20. There is the occasion way around it, but without the critical mass of readily unlocked hardware the dev support isn't there.

@NikT and everyone else, just wondering is there still a way today to get google services on the mate 30 pro? and if so, is there anything that will still be broken/not function properly? on the fence about getting this as im not impressed with my super expensive s20 ultra.

Yeah mahdi - flick me an email megghope !at! gmail and I'll tell you about my experience with mine. I also have two as I recently bought the 5G model and don't know what to do with my 4G, was gonna list it on Trademe but maybe we can figure out something mutually convenient! Could even let you have a play with it first depending on location.

Sorry to hear the Ultra is disappointing you.

Yep, still works as before. Same set of benefits and limitations to be aware of as previously detailed. As long as you know what to expect re: Google Pay and streaming services etc. Some with specific use-cases won't be, but I'm personally fine with sideloaded GMS. Helps that I'm familiar with most of the limitations from using test devices with unlocked bootloaders which don't pass SafetyNet, the only thing I miss is the AptX codec suite really.

If you have an old device with the capability lying about, unlock its bootloader and set it up fresh and you'll get the gist of life without SafetyNet.

The Mate 30 Pro is an excellent device. Camera, ergonomics, and battery life are superb. The major feature I wish it had from the S20 series is a high refresh rate, which I hope to see in future Huawei products.

I've also come to appreciate the virtual volume buttons - they're on both sides!

I would have brought the Mate 30 so quick with GMS. I keep hoping but it's all sounding a big no for coming back. I snagged cheap a mint second-hand P30 from my work and brought the GT2 watch.  I was going to get the Ultra but some early camera comparisons with the Mate 30 had me worried. Reviews since out are not good either. Heck, I started the thread on the Ultra I was so torn. Really glad went the way I did. Even transfer Mate 20 to P30 was flawless tbh.

This application by Google a couple of weeks back seemed like pretty good news but will take some time to be turned around:

Re: HMS + sideloaded GMS, I posted my experience here

Lists what I've found to work and not + various workarounds.

Apologies, thought it was in this thread. Perhaps I should start a new one specifically for this as it will continue to be relevant as more Huawei devices with HMS are released.

My daily driver is the Mate 30 Pro 4G, although I am currently using the ASUS ROG Phone II after stable Android 10 dropped for it last week. Expect I'll switch back to the Mate for the camera + wireless charging.

Yup, just got me a mate 30 pro today. Did the LZplay thing first and set up google services, now using phone clone to restore my S20 Ultra to the Mate 30 pro . Lets see if this thing can make me happy after the dissapointment of the exynos s20 ultra!

Enjoying the mate 30 pro so far, however one big issue I have is notifications not coming through for a bunch of apps like outlook herald snapchat and any other news apps. I have set them to manually launch and allow in background but it has had no effect. That would usually fix it with other Huawei phones Iv had but it isn't this time. Any ideas? @NikT are u experiencing this?
