I am wanting to transfer files (phots) from a phone to an external wifi-enabled hard drive.

Can this be done using native Android apps (cannot see drive in File Manager etc), or is a specific app required?

If separate app, any recommendations?

I've got a Seagate wireless drive and from memory, I needed a separate app to be able to do so wirelessly. It's been a few years since I last used it though so probably can't tell you any more than that.

What's a WiFi-enabled hard drive? What protocols does it talk? NFS? FTP? SMB?

UPDATE:  Found someone had created an app specifically for the device … photos/files easily transferred back and forth now. 😀

For others who might come across this thread.

@afe66, you are quite correct 🙃

The device is a portable drive capable of USB, Ethernet, and wifi connectivity.  I bought the enclosure (DM H5-WFD027) and popped a spare 2.5 drive into it.

It works like any other portable drive when using USB, Ethernet or wifi when accessed on a computer, but I wanted to demonstrate its usage as a portable wifi unit when travelling and needing to clear a heap of photos off their phone/tablet etc (some devices are not always OTG compliant, people may not want to bother with uploading to a cloud storage, or even have internet access at the time, etc etc).

The standard Android File Manager or Storage options do not show the drive when wifi accessed, so I looked for an app that could achieve this easily.  A search of Google and Google Play came up with a few options dedicated to this device, and I used one that worked with no fuss at all (DM Airdisk from Netcom).

I transfer files from my Android phone to my PC using Resilio Sync. From there the PC can do anything required. I find Resilio (BitTorrent) works great for transfer between just about any two computers / devices / etc.
