ShinyChrome: So whats the overall verdict guys: stud or dud?

The missus Nexus 5x finally kicked the bucket, so I'm contemplating something out of the s20 range. And by that, I mean I will try and give her my note 9 so I can get a new phone haha

I cant comment on overall performance but my daughter has just purchased the s20 ultra and in the week or so that she has had it has done about 6 random restarts . Looking at the Samsung support site it looks like she is not the only one . She came from the s9 and apart from restarts she seems happy especially with camera .

I have not had any issues whatsoever, smooth as butter.

Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated. Went and had a bit of a play today and now I'm debating the $300 difference between the + and Ultra. I really wanted to like the Ultra as a balls-out uber-flagship with cool camera tech, but so far the general feedback here and online seems to be that the major selling point of the Ultra, the cameras, don't actually add up to a big improvement over the general S20 experience. And I'm cool with the size of the +, so the +0.2" extra screen inches and the +500mah battery don't really add a whole lot by themselves.

But then, I guess a similar sort of argument could be made is the half 5g, +500mah, ToF camera, and +0.5" real screen-estate worth it over the vanilla S20 really, so I guess that sort of thinking is a rabbit hole itself...

I guess I'm landing on the + then? Either way, looks like JB HiFi is gonna be the way to go with the $200 voucher, in conjunction with the 2Degrees $300 off.

For me the sweet spot is the plus. The regular s20 is too small with screen battery and missing tof. Even though I got the ultra, I would still recommend the plus to everyone. Unless you're an uber geek like me who just needs to have the latest best in the industry tech with no logical reasoning whatsoever 😂 and also doesn't mind a massive phone, in fact welcomes it.

I think you are right, and that's really what I am debating: the + makes the most sense feature wise, while the Ultra is the yolo-just-do-it-because-I-can option.

Hoo-boy, tough decision...

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have been scammed for S20 Ultra through FB Market. There is a gang working in west Auckland  on robbing people from their shiny new phones. Its through cheque scam without  you knowing that the cheque has been deposited in your account. I have filed a compliant with police with all the proofs. Blacklisted my phone. So be careful if you ever decide to sell.

Any know where I can get a glass screen protector without the hole in the middle for the fingerprint sensor?

Even if you could, don't think it would work properly with the fingerprint scanner. The one comes with the phone is holding up pretty good for me. Probably best to get a film one

I don't use the fingerprint sensor and film screen protectors scratch up too quickly for me since I work outdoors.

I would recommend you have a look at those fully enclosed
cases they would probably be better . Some of them are quite bulky and quite expensive tho

So I ended up going with an S20+. I'm not gonna lie though, even though I know logically the Ultra is not a massive difference, I am still restraining the urge to take the + back and swap it for an Ultra haha. What a muppet...

First impressions from the 48 hours I have had it, it seems like a solid upgrade (which it should be for the price). I like the weight and form-factor more than my Note9, even if it took a little adjustment, but I honestly wouldn't have upgraded if I hadn't needed a new phone. Anyone coming from a S8/N8 and older is in for a real treat though.

Loving the 120hz screen, everything is just so fluid. It just adds a bit extra slickness to One UI and I haven't noticed any stutters/frame rate drops/freezes so far, it's been buttery smooth and rock solid. Hopefully they add in a 90hz option as a nice middle ground, but so far I prefer the 1080p/120hz mode. Cameras seem good so far just having a play with them, but will probably need more mileage to fully appreciate any improvements. Ultra-wide is a nice touch and the zoom is definitely a big improvement, but as has been established, 30x is just marketing. 10x is barely usable, but anything below that seems to be ok. Battery life seems to be ok, but I also have a wireless charging cradle sitting on my desk, so I really don't need to worry about an all day charge either. I have also been switching between running 120hz at out-of-work hours and 60hz during the workday and run dark mode all the time, so the real test will come on the weekend.

Weirdly enough, I don't see what the fuss about the finger print sensor is about. Either I got a good unit or the factory screen protector is better or other reasons, but I am finding it quite snappy, even a bit faster than the N9's capacitive one. I definitely prefer it over the back mounted ones I have used, if only for being able to use a thumb. I had some issues with it requiring multiple attempts when my thumb was quite dry (must be washing my hands enough), but that's it. I guess its hard to judge exactly where the sensor area is with the screen off, but now that I have used it for a bit, I can pretty much hit it the first time.

Mrwhostheboss did a comparison on youtube between snapdragon 865 & exynos 990 versions of the s20 ultra. Worth checking out. Summary: snapdragon version was superior in every category he checked. It was significantly faster, ran significantly cooler, didn’t thermal throttle anywhere near as much, therefore ran games smoother, it also had significantly better battery life, and had better image processing.

I didnt mind getting exynos s10 last year because it wasnt to much slower and it allowed 60fps recording in filmic pro while the snapdragon versions didnt. But this year after seeing mrwhostheboss video i cant help but feel a bit disappointed with how wide the gap is this year.

Camera update seeding now on NZC, TNZ, and VNZ. Looks like it should fix the autofocus issues, among other things.

If there is anyone thinking of a post-2020-lockdown upgrade, Andrei Frumusanu of Anandtech posted up a fairly accurate review of the S20+ and Ultra, as well as comparing the Snapdragon vs Exynos models.

Basically if you game, or other compute intensive cases, you are better off looking at something else, most likely SD equipped. My usage is fairly typical web browsing, messaging, so I haven't really felt the performance was lacking at all to be fair.

The battery sucks (or more accurately, the display) at 120hz mode, which I have found to be the case leaving it on all the time; hopefully Samsung implements a variable refresh rate mode. But really its relative to performance you would expect from the size of the battery, it does alright if not left on 120hz all the time.

The cameras still need a bit of optimizing work across the line, but as other reviews found, the Ultra doesn't really distinguish itself as much as the specs would have you believe. Unless you really want slightly better night photography or pretty good 4-30x telescopic shots, and can live with that thicc-ness, save your money.

Everything else is typically Samsung; heavy and polished. Still not seeing what other people are saying about the FP sensor. After using mine for a few weeks, it rarely ever requires multiple attempts and unlocks pretty snappy.
