I'm thinking of getting the s20 but i don't know whether i want the cheaper version or the s20+.

Depends on whether you want to pay the extra $400 for the slightly bigger screen, depth sensor, 500mah battery, and most importantly, 5g modem. S20 will be 4g only here.

I will be interested to what the battery life reviews are like with the external modem arrangement.

I'm tempted with the larger screen and battery, But I don't know whether or not it justifies the extra $400

All I can say right now is buy once, cry one, friend. The only regret you will have is if the phone is too big for your front pockets.

My Note 9 gives me a nice "phoner", but maybe I just need to stop wearing fitted jeans haha.

Does anyone know if there will be hands-on display models before release? Size not an issue but screen ratio for me.

The other thing that I don't love are the Exynos processors which from reading reviews of previous generations are not as good battery wise and potentially slower for day to day use than the snapdragons.

I've never owned a phone recently that doesn't have snapdragon, so I can't really comment, but I sort of feel more comfortable with Snapdragons.

Based on other Sammy phones usually Spark has them available before launch to play around in store.

Aside from the warranty issues, is there any downside in using the Snapdragon version here? I understand they work with different bands, so maybe the coverage / reception isn't as good here?

Snapdragon 5G - Snapdragon Modem X55  (Discrete)

(LTE Category 24/22)
DL = 2500 Mbps - 7x20MHz CA, 1024-QAM
UL = 316 Mbps 3x20MHz CA, 256-QAM

(5G NR Sub-6 + mmWave*)
DL = 7000 Mbps
UL = 3000 Mbps

*Depending on region and model
Exynos 5G - Exynos Modem 5123 (Discrete)

(LTE Category 24/22)
DL = 3000 Mbps 8x20MHz CA 1024-QAM
UL = 422 Mbps ?x20MHz CA, 256-QAM

(5G NR Sub-6)
DL = 5100 Mbps

The exynos / snapdragon difference is mainly down to GPU. The Adreno has always been markedly faster than the Mali's. The exynos are synthetically faster, but has never translated into real life usage. SD is also supposed to be more efficient, but again, real life difference is minimal.

They were used in North American devices historically due to the qualcomms patents on CDMA and the providers there. But since Samsung has shuttered their custom CPU outfit, it is probably going to swing the other way now.

The device itself is specced for USA though.

Often those are hardware locked to USA Bands so basically useless here... They have so many backwards plans.

PB Tech say they will have them available starting from the 13th-17th of Feb. I may go into the Samsung store at the Albany mall today see if they've got them there yet.

Pbtech bundles are live.

The router or headphones are neat deals if you need either, but given I have seen those headphones for a lot less than RRP, I imagine re-sale is limited. Then again, TradeMe...

Finally it's S20 day. These launches are always a lot of work and a lot of fun.

Few details folks here may find interesting:

  • NZ stock is Dual SIM this year, with eSIM as well - can use 2x physical nano SIMs or 1x physical + eSIM - very welcome change
  • Live demo units for retail are a little delayed, and will be deployed across the country from 13th-17th, model by model
  • Australian pre-sales offer is just the Buds+ in white(!), so NZ is far and away better for pre-sales this time around

This is the new second-gen PXC 550-II that launched at the tail end of last year, not the older model. Better sound, better ANC, better battery life, and new stealthy all-black finish etc. They're quite nice.

Thanks, I stand corrected. Looks like it gets Bluetooth 5.0, aptX-LL, and better ANC performance over the original.

Thanks Nik, can you please confirm if the CPU is Exynos or SD?

Exynos 990 for all three models with Exynos 5123 5G modem added in for the S20+ and S20 Ultra.
