yep, but it even says in the image in the first post

https://www.oneplus.com/product/oneplus-warp-charge-30-wireless-charger

look at every review out there

it will only charge at 5W wirelessly when on a non 8 pro wireless charging station

yes its a special charger, but if it means that much to you then you would surely fork out the money for it.

I'm in a bit of a pickle, bought a Pixel 4 xl from JB Aus in November and the battery shot. So I got a refund from JB HiFi NZ as they don't stock the phone here.

Now I wonder if I should go with Oneplus 8 Pro once it's released by PB Tech here or get another Pixel 4 XL from JB Aussie. For me it really comes down to the camera so will keep an eye out for reviews on DXO Mark and reviewers.

I'd go pixel, OnePlus has never really been good when it's come to it's camera, you can also wait for Pixel 5

That price kills it for me, they want to sit at the big boys table, they need to start taking camera software seriously. They are a LONG way behind all the major brands in that regards.

LG V60 seems the best value phone now.

That's a fairly simplistic view of the OnePlus cameras. All the reviews suggest that some shots are definitely worse than say the S20 Ultra but some are better.

The OnePlus cameras have come a long long was from what they were (I have a OnePlus 6 which had the first "good" OnePlus camera).

If the camera is only what is really important I wouldn't be looking at a OnePlus or Pixel. The only thing good about a Pixel is the camera and updates, they never have solved their quality problems.

The P30 Pro would be very hard to go past for value and cameras.

.. and somehow OnePlus seems to be worse than Samsung at supplying security updates.

They're a lot better than most. My OP5 bought 2.5 years ago started with Android 7, now on 9 and promised 10. Current security update 1 Feb. With the android OS I can't see any issues getting security updates every few months or so. If it was major, I'm sure it would be pushed sooner. The other big advantage that speeds things up is that there is no local involvement, all updates straight from OP. And the fact that it has no localisation does not seem to have given me any issues.

I was looking to update this time around, but not so sure. The price/performance advantage has pretty well gone and I have a general dislike of curved screens.

As for IP68, sheez. Do people really go swimming with their phones? Mine's got wet in the rain loads of times and not faltered.

Nokia 6110, 6210, 6234, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, Huawei Ideos X5 (Windows Mobile), Samsung Galaxy SIII, LG G4, OnePlus 5, iPhone Xs Max (briefly), S21 Ultra. And I thought I hadn't had many phones - but the first one around 1997.

I'm with Samsung, so you can probably tell that day 1 updates aren't a priority for me, but some people get quite precious about it. I used to be like that, but as you say, most of them are pretty standard stuff, not exactly day 0 active exploits. OS updates seem to be faster than most for OP, but then again, I would expect that given they have such a thin skin. Good to see the longer support though.

I think the water resistance goes hand-in-hand with the price; if I am shelling out a couple of grand for a device, at minimum I expect it to have that sort of rating. I take all reasonable precautions to avoid water, but that way if it accidently goes swimming and something breaks, it makes for an easy discussion with the OEM warranty support or my insurer.

KiwiSurfer:

Surprised to see the love for wireless charging.

I have actually been charging my phone more with wireless than wired (before the lockdown). I have one of the Samsung duo chargers on my work desk, which doesn't seem overly fussy about location. I just chuck it on in whenever I am at my desk as it makes a convenient place for it to sit and it charges throughout the day. Since I am at my desk most of the day, the slow speed doesn't really matter and it is usually at 100% well before I go home. Its also nice to know there is a backup if the USB port fooks off out of warranty though.

While we have been stuck at home, I have been making good use of the new super fast wired charger though.

Now I'm confuse which one to buy. Oneplus 8 pro or Xiaomi Mi 10 pro. Both have good specs and about the same price.

Assuming they both cost about the same (neither has any NZ pricing announced yet by their respective stockists) then it comes down to a few things:

  • Software experience - near stock Android on 8Pro Oxygen OS or more heavily skinned with bloatware on MIUI
  • Track record for Android OS updates = Oneplus > Xiaomi
  • Camera quality - if you believe the hype on 108MP on the Mi 10 Pro and DxO Mark ranking vs the pair of 48MP sensors on 8Pro

Personally between the two, I'd go for the 8Pro hands down, for the near stock Android experience and that beautiful 1440p with 120hz refresh goodness (couple more features 8Pro has over the Mi 10 Pro)

You’re not paying a couple of grand for the OnePlus 8. The Pro is a different animal obviously.

I have had a number of OP devices, i loved them the only reason why i got sick of them was a bad first release of android 10 (buggy but has been fixed) and no wireless charging.  Another thing that bugs me about them is no NZ/AU power supply, yes you can use/get oppo ones but they tend to still be at 20 watts.

Would i get a 8 pro?  Maybe, they still don't do a nz/au charger or wireless charger (the new oneplus wireless charger has a built in cord/plugs) and QI wireless at 5watts is very 2015.  If they had this at 15watts for QI and 30 for warp then i would have jumped on it.

I guess it depends a lot on your disposition between thin OxygenOS vs. thiccccccc MIUI, but for a better screen, faster USB3.1 port, give the OP8P a call.

I would hesitate to call one camera setup better than the other, but the cameras look a bit more interesting on the Mi 10 Pro and given OP's history with cameras, might be worth a look. 108MP main binned to 27MP, two telephotos (8MP 5x, 12MP 2x), and a 20MP ultrawide. And 50w wired charging.

I would wait until there is a few more reviews to be honest.

True, although if the the OP8 comes in at the $1000-1500 mark, a) that's still a lot of money and b) I feel like there more competitors in that bracket that have it than not.

I guess we will have to see where it lands on price. A $500 phone that breaks? Fook the fooking fooker, I'll buy another one. A grand, more? Yeah..... nah....

In my opinion:

Mi 10 Pro's advantage:

IR Blaster
Higher Megapixel Camera (capable of 50x hybrid zoom)
90hz RR (gives more battery)
Better cooling technology for gaming
Higher Antutu score
Higher Mega Pixel front Camera
No stupid color filter camera
30W Qi Wireless Charging (proprietary wireless charger not required) vs 5W on Oneplus 8 pro

OP 8 Pro's Advantage:
Better screen display (10-bit, 10B colors, QHD+ Resolution)
120hz RR (will consume more battery)
Higher MP Ultra-wide Camera
Front Camera have EIS vs Shaky mi 10 pro selfie camera
12GB ram on 256gb variant vs 8gb on mi 10 pro (12gb ram variant maybe more expensive on mi 10 pro)
IP68 rating
usb 3.1 vs 2.0 on mi 10 pro
10maH Higher battery capacity

In terms of software experience, I haven't used Oxygen and MIUI but I like the animations on MIUI better than plain/bland Oxygen OS. They both have blazing fast processor so bloatwares probably won't slow the phone down. MIUI also has a floating app feature which I think is useful when multi-tasking. I'll have to wait till I test a demo unit when this lockdown ends.

A $1000-1200 OnePlus competes with closely with the likes of iPhone 11, Huawei P30 Pro and Galaxy S10. It’s probably closest to the iPhone 11 - the guts are top notch with a different screen and camera to the top of the line. There are going to be compromises to hit that price point.

I just learned that mi 10 pro's global version is only single sim. so i'm leaning towards oneplus 8 pro now.

Where are people looking to get their 8P's from?

I see the Chinese release is on the 22nd April, does above know if this is a gonna version it at least suitable for NZ market?

I have been blissfully happy with my 5T up to this point so lost track of what versions OP so those days, it looks like there might be 3 versions, EU, USA and a generic one which I'm aiming is Chinese/global version?

I've spent the last couple of hours googling but to no avail
