freitasm:

Google Play updates are independent from the OS updates.

Thanks, I'm aware they're independent, but Play updates are done every month, just like the OS updates. My Pixel 5a for instance is on the January 2023 Play update and I've never owned a device where the Play update lagged significantly behind the OS, so I was curious if it's just my device, or if its a Fold 4 or Samsung thing.

Well I won't be buying a Samsung device again.

My fold 4 broke. When opening up the inner screen sometimes would flash, then turn off.  Or would turn on for a bitthen off.  Or just not turn on at all.

Once it was opened, closing it would never bring the main screen back on.  And would need a hard reboot to work again.

But effectively making the inner screen useless.

Did some googling, turns out, quite a common issue.  something about the ribbon cable connection.  Figured fine, I'll send it in for warranty repair.

Samsung have came back, saying cost $450 to fix, user damage.  Err.. what no.  It's never suffered any damage.  Never dropped or anything.

Their proof of damage was some scuffs marks ont out screen protector.  From you know.. normal wear and tear

Which they had to photo on an angle to show in a picture.  Marks I've never noticed in person.

So not happy.   Fighting them on this one.  But yeah, they lost a customer for life.

@reven:

How'd you get on with this? Is the actual screen cracked like that or is it just the after market screen protector?

I just sent mine in yesterday (brought on launch day) for a warranty claim as it suddenly stopped having any reception (after a firmware update oddly enough)

Waiting to see of they will decline warranty or not. I do have phone insurance so hopefully wipe be covered one way or the other.

Still fighting away, but not getting anywhere.

Currently asking for a cost break down and detailed overview of what actually needs fixing.

Basically they said, the screen is damaged and no longer water proof.  Fix is a sub LCD replacement.  I questioned back saying... but then what about the screen, it wont be waterproof and you moaned about it not being waterproof.

And also the quote had stuff like, when we open it up, if it gets more broken, ie the glass, the cost will go up.   Its seems super shady, and I'm at the point where, stuff it.. bye bye phone.

Cos it could cost $450 to repair, or it could cost $1000.

Seriously, Samsung suck, never buy anything Samsung again.

Take 2D where you got it from to the Disputes Tribunal. As soon as you ask for their legal contact details to enter into the Disputes Tribunal application, they will change their ways real quick.

Add me to the list. I was driving on Saturday and noticed Android Auto was being a bit slow and laggy. When I got home, the inner screen would not turn on at all.

I did a soft reset but it didn't help. So I've sent it in for warranty I guess. I think it's about 13 months old. Truth be told, I'd noticed some weird matrix type screens when I shut or opened it. I'd also noticed it simply wouldn't wake once the screen was off.

But I got a new screen protector about three months ago and since then I almost never fold it. Just treat it like a normal phone. As when the screen protector starts to lift in the fold, it's really, really annoying. And looks gross. So I'm in the wait and see category.

Yes my screen protector started bubbling about 8 months in, had it replaced and it's started bubbling again. Guess it's just the nature of these phones. I think the technology is still just a bit too new. You've got to budget the downtime of a screen protector replacement once a year, and the very real risk of a fault that may or may not be covered under warranty.

I did mine on a 2 year plan with insurance but now that one nz have discontinued mobile insurance I'll have to decide weather to get the fold6 with samsung care or just go back to a slab phone. Not sure which I'll do at this point.

My inner screen protector failed about 4 months ago, so 18months in or so.

I just bought one off TradeMe and replaced it myself, was trivial.

But yeah without some kinda of actual insurance/proper warranty on a $2500+ phone that they can just say "impact damage" on to avoid repairing it.   Its just not worth it IMO/IME.

I could take them to disputes tribunal, they will say they had 2 technicians look at it and say impact damage, so it would just get throw out and be a waste of my time and money.

I really wish I just took it to a normal phone repairer now instead of going under warranty.  I have no faith in samsungs repairer in NZ.

But eh, I'm pretty much over it, it was a nice phone, but I'm not going to keep putting good money after bad.

,,, the only impact it ever had was being in my jeans pocket, different pocket to my keys, just ... yeah... stupid samsung, you suck!.

It did save me $4000 though, was going to buy a bigger samsung ultra wide monitor.   now i wont :P

I will say mine does look immaculate. I didn't start off with a case as being folded all the time I figured it didn't need it. But it was super slippery without one. So I tried a couple of Otter Box ones that have been on since the first couple of months

Same here ^.

Mind you, I only fold/unfold my device once a day on an average (fold it when going to the office, and unfold it when I get back home. The grip case makes it easy to hold and operate the phone in its unfolded state, I reckon everyone should get this case IMO.

I also avoid taking my phone to dusty/sandy locations like the beach, since it's not dust proof. In saying that, I did go to a desert in WA last year, but my Fold stayed in my bag all the time, and I only operated it after I had a shower and ensured that I was fully sand-free before touching it.

I'm on Fold5 now and it's doing well too, and have given my 4 to my Dad. Both have been excellent devices, with my only complaint being the lack of dust resistance.

18 months on the original protector, damn I must just be unlucky then. I wanted to do it myself but to many inconsistencies about weather it voids warranty or not.

I mean the cracked screen is clearly user error, I guess the issue is the fact that the blanking inner screen is a common fault so it's pretty poor of them to use it as a reason to decline the repair of at least that fault.

Mine is in immaculate condition after 22 months, using samsung grip handle case (with grip handle removed) I definitely look after it but it gets heavily used daily, both screens. Generally it's been a great phone and I would struggle to give up the massive screen, really just depends weather I'm willing to keep forking out the insurance premiums or not.

As an update I have got my Flip4 back. It was repaired under warranty. However it was wiped, which was generally expected, but annoying none the less.

I think they replaced twelve parts, but I assume a bunch of it was stuff that was glued in and couldn't be reassembled. Well, I assume it's my phone back. I've got no way of telling unless the IMEI is on the box I guess.

What drives me insane as that I can't find any normal message tones. They seem to be all awful or actually ringtones, not just a short sharp notification. Man this stuff drives me nuts. I've just had it on mute all day and the google assistant doesn't seem to want to work in the car either. I feel we've gone full circle with permissions, that everything is disabled by default. So I seemingly have to go into each thing and tick what I want it to do.

So fingers crossed this screen lasts longer than the first.
