freitasm:

Also, it seems this was released by Google now (found an article from a couple of days ago), at least in the USA, but not all devices outside that country.

As I said in my original post, I checked for trackers around me using unknown tracker alerts and the first time I used I found an air tag which sinced I was at home, I assumed was my wife's. Since then I have found none around me.

What device are you using? Still using a Google Pixel?

I stand corrected. A Google Play update was installed on my Samsung Galaxy Fold4 and added this feature.

I emailed Chipolo asking when they will be shipping the Point, seeing the software is now publicly available.

Can you share the article @freitasm? I still have the old app on the Samsung S23U with no sign of a Google Play update.

I can confirm both my Samsung Galaxy Fold4 and the Oppo Flip2 have received an update to Google Play and now show the scan.

@hairy1 the article doesn't add much, just that it is available now (read the article in incognito, so no history to find it).

Just open Settings and search Google Play. You will see Google Play System Update under Software Information. Tap that and check for updates. You want it to be 1 July 2023.

So can I please clarify what this software update means in practice? Am I right in assuming that, once Pebblebee and Chipolo actually ship their Android-based trackers, provided one has that Jul 23 release (which I do) the trackers will work as intended? Thanks.

Google has added a tracking function similar to the Apple one. It means ALL Android devices now can see and report position for compatible trackers.

Before this being part of the system you could use only Find my Device to find your phone (and some other specific devices). This update allows trackers to work without having to install app-specific software, which automatically makes the network of listener devices immensely larger than before.

It also means old Chipolo, Tile and other brands won't take advantage of this change and still require the apps, until you start using the new compatible trackers.

I have the 1 July 2023 Google Play system update however don't have Unknown tracker alerts in Safety and Security. What is your Android security patch level @lchiu7 and @freitasm?

I have 1 July.

Cheers, Matt.

It’s present on my phone (S21U), which has the same dated security patch as yours (1Jul).

This setting must be server side somehow. It has appeared in Safety and Emergency this morning.

Cheers!
