I'm planning on getting the XT compatiable desire from Telstra in Australia or the AT&T Nexus One, would prefer the Desire but it's going to have custom Telstra software (I have seen the Telstra HD2 and they put a big Telstra logo on the home screen and add links to their portal etc) and I don't know if you'll be able to replace it with generic non branded HTC software? If that's impossible I'll probably go with the N1.

Price might be closer to $900 I'm thinking.

I was thinking about just getting these in for others, and skipping this gen of devices in favor of the Samsung i9000, but the reviews for this handset are piling on the superlatives and I think I will grab one after all. That being the case I will probably just order two and hand one off to whoever is keen, or list it on Trademe. Will be in touch once its all sorted, still trying to hold off a little longer since the source suggests that HTC may yet be dropping the price on their first shipment. Fingers crossed.

Double post since I can't edit my previous post.

Wow, the review round up continues:

Tracey and Matt - excellent review
Electric Pig - excellent, think its possibly the best phone ever, and interestingly the second major review site I've seen to rate the onscreen keyboards as better than Apple's offering
Metro - excellent
CNET - excellent
Gizmodo - excellent
Stuff - excellent again
Slashgear - very positive

Of those the Tracey and Matt review is probably the best read, very detailed for those trying to get a better idea about how the real user experience is with the handset.

I'm not sure I've ever seen such a positive set of reviews, nobody has anything but minor quibbles, some of which will be fixed very soon with the FW update to add 720P and DivX playback. Looks like the time to jump into Android is now.

Wow, Clove has essentially the same price as the guy I was dealing with, if not better. Just did the same, much less hassle - you other guys who were keen get onto it!

Just had confirmation today that my 32Gb card has shipped too, a bit slow from Sandisk, but they predictably didn't quite have enough stock to cover initial demand on the cards. Can't wait to load my entire music collection onto that bad boy and chuck it in my HD2 and then Desire!

Yeah, Clove charged me $749NZD shipped.  I couldn't resist that price.

Even with GST coming into NZ the price is likely to be quite a bit better than our parallel importers will manage. Now got to find out about Android and get some apps ready to install! Already got a license for run.gps, since I use that on my HD2 currently with my BT heart rate monitor, looking forward to using Tunewiki and a decent lastfm player, quite a few things to find functionality-wise for it to cover me. Real shame there doesn't appear to be a Palm OS emulator, since that would let it take up the slack in terms of medical programs, but I guess it will come.

Hey Guys,

Ordered mine last night well two actually, one for the wife too :) Anyway looks like clove.co.uk are getting  approx 600 units in for the first shipment. I was lucky to still have some money left in my UK account before I escaped..... er.... Emigrated :)

Aron at Clove was the sales guy I talked to, Really great to get that kind of service nowadays. I paid 330 GBP plus 45 for shipping DHL for both phones. He could only do discounts for 5+ units... shame I dont have more wives.
Anyway I"ll post again as soon as the unit arrive. Feel free to ask me any questions about the unit after it arrives. I'm sure that even with all the reviews floating around there will be questions. or just drop me a pm or email me at plehmann  at  gmail dot com.

regards

Piers

As the UK ones will come with a Gargantuan UK power plug, anyone know whether a NZ one can be purchased locally for the Desire?
