I've opened this thread  from the previous  one that was more centered around where to get deals from and  some of the ordering process that people such as myself went through.

Just to kick things off I just received my HTC Desire, one for me and one for my wife today around 12.30 it was shipped from www.clove.co.uk on friday aroung 9.30am.
That was some fo the fastest shipping and customs clearance that I' ve had so far :)

Parcel went Fedex International priority (45 GBP) and I liased with the fedex people in AUCK and in Chch throughout  the delivery, once I had some form of confirmation ( which was Fedex phoning me up at 8.20am today).
The Process with clove was great and they were responsive , professional and helpful at all times, nice to deal with a company that covers all those bases.
The only thing was, I never received notification of the shipment or tracking number. No matter, they were here really quick.
My Wife ( should Wife be with a capital W? or small 'w' hmmmm ...God or god ;) is trying to work her way through  so I may get her to put some comments  from the point of a rather non technical/non enthusiats point of view.

I was gonna get an HD2 and would still be very very happy with that choice but what with windows mobile 7 or lack thereof and more to the point lack of many features (SD card, multitasking etc etc etc) in the operating system and the recent worm doing the rounds I'm feeling a little more secure in going the android route.

So, I'm happy to answer questions that peeps may have about the phone or process I went through.
the phone has just done an over the AIR update (wifi) to version 1.15.405.4 really quick and easy.
Now time to search for apps the first will be something along  'prey' or wave secure. both of which are location programs for when/if the phone gets lost /stolen.
prey I think is free but the android version os still in development...
more to come as I think of it.

fire away...

Er, what? SD card and multitasking are both there for the HD2, I have one. Or are you referring to WM7, which I actually think is much worse than the current WM6.5.x with Sense UI overlay (WM7 has gone the Apple route with regards to a closed platform, not for me). I do think if you're buying a phone now though that the Android platform offers more going forward...

I'd be interested to see some demo shots on the camera:
- a plain white wall
- inside/outside (artificial lighting: CFL and incandescent vs. natural light)
- flash performance
- a quick video clip indoors/outdoors

...that kinda stuff. I have an N1 and this is one thing that I think needs work, interesting to see if/how the Desire has improved.

Also, does the Exchange sync do calendars (not that I use exchange)?

Can you see paid apps in the Market or just free ones?

Apparently in some countries the paid ones are blocked.

Cheers.

Thats because the handset is new, apparently once Google 'approves' the handset or some such then all apps are visible, or at least thats what a quick perusal of some Android forums revealed to me earlier...

That was impressive shipping, makes me think I may see mine this week afterall...

A question I have is about OTA updates - I take it in our case for a phone not officially supported here by any telco instead of them 'broadcasting' the update, we will just get these off the net as a download?

yup of course you are right for 6.5.x not a particulalry well constructed part of the post. I was looking foreward to an upgrade path to wm7 series OS on the HD2 as it is at the moment 6.5.x is far better from what I and it would seem many other want to do with their phones. I would  hazard to suggest that some even bought the phone because of 6.5.x +Sense and the ability to customise the phone operating environment.

That worm look nasty though and  I've been stung using windows on a number of occasions... the thought of running a virus scanner on the phone. sigh I REALLY like th HD2  the father in LAw got one... definately the most coverted device  in a long time of me coverting devices.

The Market place  worked flawlessly both paid and non paid apps listed and D/led fine over the wi-Fi

DC,
Yes the phone picked up the Wifi and found the update... downloaded it... CRC'd it  and then installed... rebooted and bobs ya uncle!!

I've yet to search what the update did as I 1) was not savvy with the phone...setup... or screens etc. 2) what the update was supposed to update... yet.

My only concern with the Desire is syncing with MS Outlook. Have read there have been some issues with HTC Sync not doing the job. Would be interested in hearing of any successes/fails in this department.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

BH,
Good point ,
FOr some reason my office install seems to think that it is illegal, Considering  that when 2007 came out I bought it, I'm afraid to say that some of my other versions  were er.. trials.... never had problems with them and now that I actually have bought the damn things  its comes up as non-legit ... sigh.. Point being that I too want this functionality and  my wifes laptop is being changed over from OSX to WIN7 (Gasps from the crowd... shock horror... people fainting etc) ... as such the build of win7 Home premium and office 2007 Small business edition will be a good candidate to fingure out what if any problems there are...

That said the Mail and GMail syncing options are absolutely superb.. in that they just work
Do you have any links to  articles  that looked at syncing bugs/ problems etc.

Cool - so I assume you mean Apple Mail and GMail? That's pretty much our entire environment. What about contacts and Addressbook?

DPW,
Nope the mail just synced up with wifes Pop3  account (work) and gmail and another imap account. No Apple mail in the mix !

the Macbooks have been both migrated or rather wifes will be  to win7  my Macbook pro 17" has been win 7  for some time after the 3.1 bootcamp drivers  sorted out the issues.
No Apple now at all.. I got sick and tired of the stupid niggling issues with networking, syncronisation problems with the nokia and the constant slopey shoulder syndrom from APple always blaming the other software/equipment.

So Unless I went iphone route  which they actually tried to get me to do  so that  the 'problems' would go away they were not interested in much help.  Apple rant over :D

I'll be setting up the outlook  for pop 3 and imap on wife computer and sorting through the sync situation in the next couple of days just as soon as the Office 2007 software arrives on the doorstep.

Thanks for the feedback you're providing, much appreciated.  A question a few may have is what size GB cards did you end up with in the box?  Clove listed them as 4 while HTC had 8 on their site.

Apple rant noted Laughing

All our mail and calendar are on Google Apps. Our home network is a combination of Snow Leopard, Vista, Ubuntu, and Server 2008. Made sense to have OS-independent solution for mail and calendar.

All going well I will be developing with Eclipse on my MBP.

This is a review I was just looking at that mentioned it again http://www.techradar.c.....

Other than that I just googled HTC Desire Sync Issue and filtered through the results. Haven't found anything after a quick scan that says it works fine.
