drjekyll: so.. i'm using Handcent SMS, and now i'm getting two notifications for each message... i can't find a way to uninstall the HTC built in messenger  - is there a way of doing this please...?

and I still can't find the 2.2 update Frown

Go into the default "Messages" app, click your "Menu" button, then "Settings". Turn off all the notifications near the bottom of the "Settings" menu, and you'll only get Handcent notifications from now on :)

awesome - thank you!

can ya think of any reason why 2.2 wouldn't show up in an unlocked non-branded manual search?

Seems to depend on when you bought it, Desires bought in June seem to be rolling through now, but no other idea as to why it takes so long.

The theory a few of us have raised here is that they may be rolling out the update according to your IMEI number, so I guess if your phone is newer than the rest of ours, you will probably get the update later on :)

EDIT: Ah, there you go. kiwitrc answered for me haha.

Otherwise I would ask where you got your phone from? And are you sure it is 100% unlocked? Or was it branded/region-locked, then unlocked by the seller and sold as being "unlocked"? :)

Someone at this forum raised the issue that even for previously locked/region-locked phones that have been unlocked have a different software version, hence these people won't get the update.

Yeah got to watch the unbranded....
Notebook city told me yesterday their phs are branded, but they flash them in house to unbrand them.... So who knows what you will end up with if you get one of thiers.
That's assuming it ever shows up....

I read this thread and DAMN YOU ALL!

I now want one. I'm student with sfa cash to my name, and I WANT ONE. I'm forcing myself to wait untill I've got more cash (ie hurry up and pay me work!) If I come on here asking how to root the phone etc within 3 weeks someone slap me.

It truly is an awesome device. But hold off if you can't afford it atm, or you'll find yourself with a fancy phone which you can't afford data plans for, and will have to resort to eating mi goreng for your breakfast.

Decent data is definitely a must for this and any other smartphone.

drjekyll> i am in the same boat as you, bought my Desire from Einfo tech last week, i have been searching for the update to 2.2 as well... still no luck.
how does your battery hold up? i dont use mine much, just day to day usage and get roughly 48hrs.. maybe im used to a nokia E series.

I just finished reading the other thread about buying from E-info Vs Clove, wish i read it first i would have gone clove, in saying that i didnt have any trouble buying it and it was delivered quite quickly.

battery is semi semi - i'm used to the N97 which lasted for days! I guess i get about 48 hours as well, depending how much browsing I done..

biggest thing i miss is the PC suite from Nokia.. especially as my phone is plugged into comp most of day at work!

Got our Desire from Clove.co.uk and updated it to FroYo no worries on me wifi..its a wicked wee phone but I am still having trouble moving from my last phone ( practically one of the original Motorola bricks) to this

Whats the best avi player ap please? I have many movies I wanna watch..taking one or two with me when i am out might be an idea

I have Google nav/ the maps ap updated but how do i make it speak to tell me directions ( like.."take the next left" and die horribly in the congestion that is aucklands spaghetti junction ) It shows me the route but it aint speaking.

Suggestions where i have gone wrong ?

Also wanting to secure my apps and contacts on the sim card IF the thing gets lost or stolen..what aps do you guys use to lock the damn thing too??

Google nav is not available in NZ yet so that's why it won't talk to you.

In terms of security theres an app called 'where's my droid' and I know theres at least one app that you can remote lock your phone, cant recall the name of it right now though.
