Do you have Root Explorer? You could open the zip file and extract the swype.apk, move it into /system/app. Not sure if you'll have to click on the apk in order to install it, possibly.

I assume the zip file downloaded correctly and it contains the file. Might have been a dud download.

I think you're right Neets, that extracting the file should work for side-loading 3rd party apps, but I have a feeling that Swype is a 'system' app, so needs ADB to install successfully. Which is why, I think, that Doc supplies it as a signed zip file.

I'd be inclined to remove any traces of Swype, including any Titanium backup of it, and attempt to use the CWM recovery option to install it. I had to resort to Doc's zip to get it installed on my SGS because it refused to install any other way. But I have to add that I did a factory re-set before I was able to get much of anything to stick. BTW, 'My Files' is capable of installing .apk files.

I'd recommend the re-set and CWM approach as the one with the highest probability for success.

I'm on a vanilla Froyo install now, and while I'm sure it's not as fast or as smooth as the 7.5 on ext4 + OCLF, I think it'll make my update to 2.3 a little less painlful. But I won't be surprised to find out that I'm wrong.

It's a pleasant feeling though when Kies sees the SGS and says, hey, have I got an update for you... and a backup and restore later, ta-daaaahhhh...

Roll on Gingerbread...

AFAIK its a seperate addon so adding medium or medium + shouldn't influence it.

Tbh it's fairly unlikely that the sgs will get gingerbread in any official capacity.there may be xda roms made though.

I'm sure you have good reasons for your scepticism and of course you may be right. The one thing that keeps me optimistic is Samsung's stated intention for 2.3 to run on the Galaxy Tab. Since the hardware of the tablet has a lot in common with the SGS, and Sammy will already be putting their development efforts into the Tab and Gingerbread, it seems likely that the SGS could easily ride its sibling's coattails. Getting 2 for the price of one, so to speak.

Plus it appears that in a basic tech sense, 2.3 isn't a huge shift from 2.2. Supposedly. We'll have to let the passage of time resolve this one for us though.

But I'm hopeful.

Hey guys,
After skimming through most of the pages in this forum over the last few hours I havent been able to locate how to update to froyo.

I bought my sgs new from Telecom, the day it came out i believe? And have recently noticed it beginning to slow down, hence the reason i want to update and get the better lagfix's. Ive seen lots of different ways to update to 2.2 but not one way involving the specs my phone seems to have..

Ive got the GT-i9000t
Baseband: I9000TDOJI1
Kernel: 2.6.29

If anyone could help me out with a link to how to update this or a nudge in the right direction thatd be great. Cheers

2.2 doesn't come with a lagfix, it will still be slow. you can either hack/flash the phone to get 2.2 or install a lagfix then wait till 2.2 becomes available for NZ telecom phone and then undo the lagfix and update using kies. up to you, but 2.2 =/= lagfix.

Perhaps he meant the availability of Lagfixes for 2.2? 2.2 has things like SpeedMod kernel with lagfixes built into the CWM recovery.

hmm there is nothing wrong with voodoo lagfix for 2.1 don't need to update to 2.2 to get "a better lagfix" infact voodoo for 2.1 has been around for ages, voodoo for 2.2 is beta (or atleast it was beta last week)

Nice link. Wouldnt mind this ported for my Captivate. It would need ports to the 4 buttons on the Captivate though.

Even the OCLF would be fine on 2.1

Voodoo is probably the best lagfix for 2.1 I think ULF 0.4 (as part of the SpeedMod kernel) is the best lagfix for 2.2 as the kernel also provides more RAM.

Have dropped off all the posts and pms to Harvey Norman. He will be sending my phone to get the external micro SD card reader fixed, as well as request for my 3 button combo to be reactivated. I wonder if they will bother fixing it and just replace it with a new phone...

Anyway, thanks so much to people who contributed to this cause. It is much appreciated. :>

I hadn't been too worried about not having the Gallery app until I discovered you can't browse LauncherPro docks without it, so if anyone needs the Froyo Gallery .apk it's here (membership needed):

Ok, for some reason I was under the impression that I couldnt get Voodoo to work because I had the
i9000t and thought that Voodoo only worked for the i9000. Correct me if im wrong (I'm assuming I am)

I'm unsure if the i9000t is supported, check the voodoo website or message @supercurio on twitter. I imagine it would be as it should be pretty similar just with a different radio.

I'm going to try flashing the Doc_Kalpik Rom V9 very soon. Hoping to improve my battery life so it actually lasts the entire day instead of running out after work.
