So, made some battery observations over the night on the JK4 modem.

Phone was taken off charge at about 16:00 yesterday, had both wifi and GPS on. Didn't use the phone for anything, just left it idling with both these on and by 20:00 when I left for work it was at 70%, so 7-8% drain per hour.

Turned off wifi and GPS when I left for work, phone is right now sitting at 60% remaining.

So <1% drain per hour. Could try with just GPS on or just wifi and see what's using it the most, the battery stats (which I checked just before I turned the GPS and wifi off) indicated wifi was the main culprit though.

Bit of a hassle for me as I'm used to having wifi on 24/7 as I have wifi at both work and home (and keep my phone logged in to MSN etc). Suppose I could just use HSDPA for that though.

kareny89: Thanks for your patience Damager. But it's still not working, the same old problem. I wonder if this is a manufacturer's fault or if I am not doing the right thing. The Messaging app isn't working either, I had to download Handcent SMS to txt.

If you go back to the stock messaging app, check that the Message Centre has +6421600600 in it.  You don't get any option in Handcent to put that setting in, but you do in the stock Messaging app.

Do you have APN Backup and Restore app installed on your phone?  I could send you my xml file (used for restoring the settings). Then you'd just fire up APN Backup and Restore and select the restore option, you'll get my settings.  Which I suspect are exactly the same as yours but you never know.

If you're interested send me a PM with your email address and I'll fire the attachment through.

You save the xml file on your internal SD under sdcard/APNBackupRestore

I changed my modem yesterday (in my signature) and I was woken at 4:18am by the notification my battery had dropped to 15%.  I had it fully charged when I went to bed at 9:35pm, replied to Wipeout a couple of times and then ignored my phone (email notification) from 10:15pm.  So that's pretty poor.  I'll be swapping to a differnent modem today at some point.

does it make much difference in your data usage if you just went 3g all the time?  i have it stuck in my head that if i leave wifi enabled, its going to kill my battery because it will be consistently looking for an AP. is this right? This is probably a carry over from my windows mobile days but

Wifi seems to be much like 3G in that if the signal isn't optimum, battery suffers.

I've found that as well, so much so I'm getting new wireless gear for the house, 2 new APs spanning upstairs/downstairs. Old dlink is horrific even on laptops, let alone on phones.

Guess we'll find out soon, I doubt stuff like email notifications/MSN/Gtalk etc would use that much data (and I'm on a data plan so may as well use it). If I want to watch youtube or something I'll just hook it up to wifi temporarily.

Does anyone else notice crackling with the stock media player? Noticed this on my old Galaxy S and now on this one, hasn't bothered me up till now cause I've had bigger things to deal with, but now everything else is sorted I'd like to get it fixed. Basically every ~20 secs or so there's a crackle/pop/stutter (however you want to describe it), it doesn't stop music playback, there is no skipping, just an audible pop that I can't get rid of.

Yea it appears with everything.

Tried turning off the music and just listening and I can still hear the pops, so it's not music related I don't think. I'm got the ear phones in now with no noise and every ~20 seconds I hear a very small pop.

with a constant frequency of occurrance, i wonder if its comms related like wifi interference/cordless phone etc.

Yea I'd say frequency of it is fairly constant. Will give it a try at work tonight to see if it's location specific.

Might see if I can find some other earphones to try too to rule that out.

So... Tried my PC headphones (Sennheiser PC350's) and while I can't hear the pop with nothing playing, I can hear it when I play audio.

Also tried the Samsung earphones on my iPod touch and the pops weren't present.
