Shrapnel:
lofreq:
so hows your idle drain now shrapnel you still on beta7 kernel?
i recently went back to gold2.0 to see how that ran, as i also upgraded to simplyhoney 3.3, and to be honest the gold2.0 is just as good a kernel. wondering how youve been finding it?

It seems pretty damn good- definitely on par with froyo and I haven't had the android os process drain problem yet which is very promising. I have tried Gold 2 but it seemed unstable and I was having a few issues so I just stuck to beta7. I have been using my phone quite a bit the last few days(I'd call it moderate use). I charged it on Sunday and took it off at about 11:30 am and this screenshot is from about 6:30 tonight.

im getting similar to your use, i havent found stability probs with gold2.0, whats happening with yours?

with moderate (in my books) use i just managed 48hrs before it gave up

display on 4hrs10min, wifi 8hrs47min, also left GPS on for a day which ive never done - was mainly surfing web on 3g and wifi, played a few rounds of robodefence, and a ton of monkeying around updating apps and reconfiguring my homescreens and widgets.

man it took like 29 attempts to get that tron wallpaper to center the circles around my circle battery and even then its still not 100% centered! lol

rossmnz: So my partner picked up one of these from China a while ago and being bored decided to have a play.

Its on 2.1 and have finally got my A into G and got a cable and downloaded Kies.

It says there are no updates available.

Does that mean because its an "international" version or just because the newest update 2.3.3? isnt out yet?

Bit confused but really CBF dealing with custom roms and all that research to see whats gonna work and what isnt-too much like having my first gen iPhone again!!

My SGS is running pretty much stock 2.2.1 which is slick, smooth and makes the third gen iPhone look like a version #1 in comparison, but then arguably, so does Eclair.

You can flash a std ROM upgrade for your carrier/region by downloading it from XDA Developers or Samfirmware, and using Odin to flash it from your PC. You'll also find links to Odin at the XDA Developers' site.

No custom ROM required.

You'll never get an automatic or OTA upgrade unless you bought an 'official' carrier-supplied phone, and even then, VF and TNZ aren't exactly rushing updates out the door. If you're looking for the Apple-esque update experience, you're about a year early I'm afraid.

Cheers,
R2D2

XDA Developers is the premier site for all things Android. They've handily categorised stuff by phone model and sub model and a search there will show you what you need without having to trawl through squillions of pages - most up to date and relevant stuff is in the first post of the appropriate thread.

It's not nearly as complex as it sounds. If I'd kept my bookmarks, I'd post them for you, but...

Some here will be able to do so as they're often more AR and OCD than I am. Laughing

I must run and hide now as I fear I've awakened them from their slumbers.

Had a quick look whilst im supposed to be working and the Odin method doesnt look too complex.

Can i go from 2.1 straight to 2.3.2 Gingerbread?

Id assume ill still be able to synch music etc using kies once this has been done>?

I just flashed my phone with the original update firmware KA1/JL1/JL1 but the Telecom splash screen is missing. How can I restore it?

My coffee just sprayed out of my nose when I read that. I might have to send you the bill for a new keyboard.

Laughing

Oh wait... you weren't joking. You really want the TNZ splash screen back? You have a warranty claim pending maybe? Make certain that the firmware is really the original Eclair version with all 3 components as originally installed (presume you backed up before flashing a non-standard ROM?). If you don't have access to the original, then some kind person here might upload their original firmware backup for you to download.

Other than that, googling "telecom nz i9000 firmware standard eclair" or similar should get a few hits.

Best of luck.

Not half as much as when I snort coffee into my nose. if it's hot. That was just silly, eh?

I'll shut up now.

When playing music is there a way to stop the screen from timing out, other than changing it in the screen display options in settings?

install the "Switchpro" widget, add a couple of toggles to your homescreen - one of the toggles available is "screen always on" - hit that before starting your music, your screen will not turn off till u flip the toggle off. i use this when driving with google maps to make sure the screen stops timing out.

switchpro has a bunch of other toggles that you may find useful as well, like for toggling 3g data on and off (to save your battery), all the radio toggles, rotation, autosync, etc etc.

If you already know this, don't read it...

since the music controls reside in the notification bar when the radio or music player apps are running, and remain functional even though the screen is locked, you shouldn't need to keep your screen on.

Of course, you may be watching some visualisation animation that you like, or perhaps you're testing how fast you can drain your battery, the screen being the biggest power hog on a smartphone an' all.

But if not, then timing out can be somewhat of a blessing. Smile

If I've totally misunderstood what you're asking, my apologies. Embarassed
