Shrapnel:
lokhor: What score do you get in Nenamark?

I got 45.7fps

I did come from a Speedmod kernel and I can't say I noticed a difference. I might actually go back to Doc's JS8 just to see the difference.

My first run got 45.6fps and the second run got 49.5. Stock TNZ Galaxy S running Eclair.Doka1, 2.1-update1 firmware, I9000TDOJL1 Baseband, 2.6.29 root@SE-S604 #2 Kernel.

I have a stock Telecom XT Galaxy S running Eclair 2.1.

I have done a lot of reading on upgrading the ROM in my phone in this thread;

e.g
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=62267&page_no=354#466162

but have been reluctant to take the plunge in upgrading to Froyo or Gingerbread.

Are there special steps I need to consider before doing the business and upgrading the phone, that are relevant to Eclair 2.1?

I see once you have CWM as the Kernel things get much easier.

My Galaxy S is rooted and I have my Apps backed up with Titanium.

Thanks.

You should probably backup your /efs partition which is pretty much impossible to replace if deleted(you never know). I used this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859914 Chuck a copy on your pc too.

i just have to say one thing here... after my record battery life run earlier (the phone finally clocked 80hours 3mins before it died, using DamianGTO goldv2.0) i thought it was time to try a new kernel

http://forum.damiangto.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=134&sid=d7bdd11083006ca4ba8f9defc54366d4

ive never wanted to mess with overclocking for stabilities sake, however after doing the reading up i thought to give the 1.2ghz kernel a try - after all it wouldnt run at 1.2gig all the time, that would just be the max speed at burst.

anyway i chucked on the JVB version of the overclocked kernel and - holy crapburgers. who'd have thought 200mhz would make that much difference!?! everything is so damn fast now if feels like the homescreens would flick right off the screen onto the floor. its totally alive now, cant believe it.

what impact this is going to have on the battery im going to find out, so ill report back, but first impressions - i have not seen this much improvement and difference since i first moved to a froyo speedmod kernel 'back in the day'...

just thought id post my thoughts for anyone contemplating it - will definitely switch to the JVH version when i get a JVH rom installed.

I tried the overclocked DamianGTO kernel and found the image quality so appalling I couldn't bear to look at my screen. Having good eyesight has it's downside :(

im curious as to what you actually mean. white text on black background? black text on white? color on color? are your edges aliased or blurry or something?? at what zoom level? what app do u use to test it? default browser or something else??

ive just gone to check my dark on white text, and white on dark text, and watched scale slowly it as i pinch to zoom - everything is sharp as. i dont get it.

im beginning to think your galaxy S is not a galaxy S at all... everything seems to be sub par on yours. are you sure on the back when u flip it over, is there what looks like a picture of an apple with a bite taken out of it??

maybe that first batch of phones that you got was really a buggered build :/

The text everywhere no matter what colour looks oversharpened and the letters have haloes around them. Supercurio did some work on a fix for this. Have a look here: http://project-voodoo.org/color

holy ccrap! that text effect looks horrendous! no wonder you switched back thats disgusting

mine never looked anything like that even with stock Eclair out of the box. has always been smooth as for text and icons alike.

must be certain phones that have this problem more than others.

I'm not sure maybe I have that bug or something. It says it kept my phone awake for 42m13s

Ah that's terrible battery life lokhor. I got about 64 hours with it down to 8%, then put it back on charge. This is with a few phone calls, texts, gaming so quite moderate use. This all on CF 3.1 kernel with JVB.

My Cell Standby was the second highest user of the battery for some reason, after the screen. Not sure why seems to always be the case.

Just flashed DamianGTO Ultimate Ginger Kernel Gold version 2.0 so see how that goes.

I've got a pretty new galaxy s (didn't want to wait for the sii, plus the price was right), and I know what its being said about the sharpness. Personally I don't see halos but I think things are a little over sharpened on damiens kernels compared to anything with voodoo built into it. That being said, the performance of his is an outright winner in my books so I will live with it for now. The over sharpness isn't so bad when zoomed in a little. I think the biggest thing that isn't going to be included in his kernels is bln support. I see on xda that a jvh one just came out with BLN, not sure if it works with JVB ROMs though.

I've been using JVH for a few days now and still not seeing how it's any better than JS8. I contacted Gameloft about Nova not working and they sent me a new copy that still doesn't work :(
