There was a good thread on XDA about the Wifi signal strength and what happens when you change to a Froyo modem but I can't find it anymore! I think from memory the jist of it was that the notification indication (# of bars) showed singal strength went up, however comparing dB numbers - they stayed the same. But reverting to a Froyo rom had an increase in actual signal strength.

As for GPS, I'm running the BUJV3 modem (from vodafones BUJV9 release) and get pretty quick and accurate GPS lock, failing that, I'd reccomend going back to BUJP5

Ta for the info dude.

I've bookmarked this page so I can refer back when I'm over the vanilla-ness thing. :D

A couple of questions - what's the best route to the best root on GB? I want root to be as easy as poss to apply and remove, so that will probably dictate the approach.

And my auto brightness is flakey - brightens for no reason that I can divine. Any fix for that other than turning it off?

Tx in advance.

Cheers,
R2D2

I’m going to have a crack at Gingerbread over the weekend – currently on Doc’s JPK ROM. Do I need to flash back to JM8 as a precaution? My plan was:

- Flash JM8 via Odin
- Flash JVK (either via Odin, or maybe using Kies because I live on the edge!)
- Flash Speedmod K15G via Odin
- Flash SimplyHoney via CWM

Any comments on ROM/Kernel choice are welcome! I may just use the stock ROM with a custom kernel for a while?

I used Darky's 10.1 JVH resurrection via odin, which pretty much cleans everything out and then put his 10.1 extreme over the top.

You can then flash whatever kernel and modem over that. I am using damians rc 2.1 works like a charm. Not over-clocked, but getting quadrant scores around 1400, previously I was getting 950'ish on sweet honey.

I'm a bit over sweet honey, prefer the Darky theme.

as mentioned, all you need is a GB rom with bootloaders, after that feel free to CWM flash anything else over the top

best choice would be to flash darky's 10.1 odin rom, repartition ticked, use the PIT file etc, to get a clean GB base. then flash simplyhoney over the top - since the latest one v3.6 comes with speedmod kernel already its saved you a step. so thats 2 flashes and youre all done. daresay its faster and easier then Kies.

im tempted to rewipe everything and go back to simply honey for the stability, and then flash a green theme back over it, like poisongreen  http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030275

EDIT: id wait a few days for 3.6.1 which is due in a few days as hes fixing a few small rotation bugs and more importantly the homescreen/background/lockscreen bug which sounds annoying (due to him adding 9 lockscreens! jeepers!). so might as well wait for a fully tweaked version - im trying to find out if his definitely has the non-increasing ringtone dialer cus i hate that 'feature' from samsung...

Decided to use CF root as it's something that was painless for me previously, so no advice required. But ta anyway for those thousands of helpful souls who were on the verge of pushing the 'submit' button.

On a totally different note, I see Navigon has been updated so that pinch to zoom works on the maps. Yaaaayyyy! At last. Now if only they have the pronunciation of Rd, St (Saint) and Ave right, all will be well with the world.

Cheers – so is darky’s rom a better option than the latest romkitchen offerings?  With Darky’s versions, do you still flash Ficeto’s ROM first, and then Darky’s etc?

Theme-wise, I’m liking the look of this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103016

if by Ficeto's you mean "10.1 Resurrection Odin" edition, then yes, its best to do the Odin rom first as a base, which gives you a barebones no-bloatware 10.1, then at that point you can CWM flash the full 10.1 over the top, or flash SimplyHoney, or anything else you want, using CWM

that theme is nice, lots of attention to detail, but man i am over blue. its too bad themes dont just all come in greyscale and just have a colour bar slider where you can just modify the global hue of it to whatever you wanted. that would be infinitely better than being locked to one persons colour scheme.

Yeah I agree - blue seems to be the default, which is a worry considering the blue on AMOLED screens degrades faster than other colours!  Hopefully he's re-do his Black Chrome theme for GB.

Pants. Speaking of navigon..

I stupidly didn't activate/load fully navigon when I originally got the phone.. launched then backed out.

Now of course it won't start until I update it. Launch it, and it cant be found on the marketplace. Manually search, finds it. but wont install due to region issues *facepalm*

Hopefully the GB update (when I eventually see it) may fix this short of rooting etc.

You have an Oz phone? I use MarketEnabler to spoof 50502 which finds it fine, but of course, ME requires root. Since Navigon Samsung was never intended for NZ phones, I don't know how else you'd get it to install other than ME or similar app. Or perhaps you're referring to the paid version?

In which case, forget what I just wrote.

I stuffed up my firmware yesterday by flashing the GTO cam fix and then my camera would not work at all. I ended up flashing Simply Honey 3.6 which has Speedmod K15G. K15G has some issues with not waking up from sleep due to it's conservative governor. Tonight I'm going to try the version with the ondemand governor and also may try Talon's OC/UV kernel.

Dark core is now at ver 2.5 (now with vodoo colour and voodoo sound v9) giving you something else to add to the list! Good luck!

Correct, aussie unlocked via DSE (same as what they sold here) and attempting to update free version. Which is ironic. Given its like most navigation suites and coveres bot NZ/AU freely.

You do have to wonder why theres only 800DLs of the update tho. It makes me think their update SW is infact broken adn thats why it fails when you attempt to search the codestring.

Auto update fires up market search for com.navigon.navigator_select_samsung_pac which it cant find. Manual search does but gives the wrong region error.

I'm still running 3.5.4 with AU/NZ maps I downloaded last year, but I see on their site that there is a 2011 Q1 map pack.
