could it be core changes for the OS to support the upcoming Google+ social network? Google+ is meant to intrinsically work with Android OS to allow uploading of media in realtime and sharing in your defined "Circles" as it happens... id assume some tweaks to how data is organized in android would be needed to keep in sync wih the new google service. which is looking very interesting, from the previews/demo page

Any roms released with that firmware version?

All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.

Updated my stock 2.1 Galaxy S on XT to the official 2.2 the other day which works - seems a bit sluggish and slows down over the course of the day, I like how bluetooth voicedialling now works. I would like to go to a newer 2.3.X rom and something with a better modem as since upgrading I get dropouts with my calls even with 4 bars

What version would you suggest for a modem?  UKGC1?  Also what about kernel version?

i would recommend going to a custom rom on android 2.2.1, rather than 2.3.x, for the greatest speed, stability, and for everything working perfectly. 2.3.x on our phones still has bugs with functionality that need to be worked out.

id recommend Darky's most up to date Froyo rom v9.5 as it has almost all the usability and feature-added tweaks you need on the rom, everything works and its fast and stable.
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/v9-5-good-better-v9-5.1804/

i would pair it with the latest Speedmod kernel from Hardcore, for Froyo, and convert to EXT4 filesystem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756

finally i would use the UGJL2 or UGKC1 modem for best XT performance and GPS speed, and battery life.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391

i used this setup for months on my XT handset and was very happy with the results.

There's the standard one and a deodexed one too.  Haven't seen any *custom* roms yet.

Yeah, google+ looks interesting.  The fight for the social network carries on!

Can anyone point me to a ported version of the SGS2 Swype?  Or is it available already?  I'm specifically after the message skin functionality of the SGS2 version.

Thanks heaps for this, which order would you install these in, and would you use odin?

i would do it exactly in the order described - however, it may be that your current build does not have CWM recovery built in, so you wouldnt be able to "start" as it were

if so, i would recommend

0) back up your data, sync contacts to google, and go into your mobile network settings and WRITE DOWN all your APN settings exactly as they appear

1) then flash Darky's 9.2 ODIN "ressurection" package first, which will put on a clean Froyo build, rooted/CWM recovery/superuser etc:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940671
follow all steps to 're-partition', using the right PIT file etc

2) then put the 9.5 rom on your internal storage, and boot into CWM - before you flash, select "Wipe Cache" and "wipe Dalvik cache" in advanced options. then, "choose ZIP to flash" and flash the v9.5 package
then reboot and make sure it gets to the home screen ok. (calls wont be possible or reliable because the modem will currently be incorrect, but ignore this for now). go to menu>settings>about phone and check it is showing Darky's rom in the build details

3) then copy the Speedmod kernel to internal storage, again reboot to CWM recovery and flash that. again, boot to desktop and test. (check that the kernel version now references Speedmod)

4) then copy the modem you want to use (CWM2 flashable version) onto the internal storage, reboot to CWM, flash, reboot, check in settings if the BASEBAND now shows the correct modem

5) re-set up your APNs for Telecom internet, and MMS

6) punch in service code *#0011# and make sure the phone is using 850MHZ WCDMA

7) test 3g data (make sure it is showing the "H" icon on your data, signifying HSDPA connectivity), test your GPS and wifi, make some test calls, send some test sms and mms. at that point if all is working then i say thats that.

you dont need to copy the CWM packages to the phone one at a time, after you do the ODIN install you can probably copy across the v9.5 package, the speedmod kernel, and the modem CWM zips all at the same time, to speed things up later.

Updated a Galaxy S GT-I9000 from Eclair 2.1 to Gingerbread-XXJVP firmware 2.3.4 using the process laid out at this website:

http://androidadvices.com/how-to-update-samsung-galaxy-s-i9000-to-gingerbread-xxjvp-2-3-4-firmware/

This was easy and worked flawlessly. Note that when you restore your APNs the old "Default" APN type is no longer available. Use "Internet" where you used "Default" previously, and "MMS" for mms.

this method just describes flashing stock JVP using ODIN. quite straight forward and a good guide, just be aware this only works for Vodafone/2degrees customers and further steps will be required to get the modem working correctly for XT customers.

this would be a good option for those wanting a pure STOCK experience without any tweaks and upgrades for example as available in the darky 10.1 ODIN package.

So when upgrading from v2.1 using this method...hoe do you restore your paid apps? I have my apps backed up using Titanium but am unsure how this step would happen post the upgrade?

I am assuming you are skipping part 2 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940671 and applying the v9.5 package.

I am still a little wary of this procedure as I have never had much luck with the phone in mass storage mode.

IMPORTANT. Under Modem choose BUJP5 if you are Vodafone.

I did this initially but I flashed JV1 modem which is the one that VF NZ have in their Gingerbread rom.
Even though I'm with 2 degrees, I found it an improvement over JP5.

There seems to be something wrong with deodexed JVP-based roms which is causing the phone to coma. I am very tempted to try stock JVP because I am totally fed up with checking my phone and finding I can't wake it.

JP5 was indicated as to be for vodafone worldwide but I will accept your findings - after all I no longer has a stock one to check.

However I can say that my rom is by far the best I have had for power consumption. The combination of chainfire's tweak tool to get the conservative cpu governing on, plus Juice Defender, mean I am now getting nearly two days of decent use out of my Galaxy  i9000

I never got much over half a day of decent use with cyanogenmod

your paid apps are still registered as paid on the market, on your account, regardless if they have been wiped from your phone. so you can redownload and reinstall them again to your hearts content.

alternatively as you have backed up wisely using TB then its a simple batch operation to "restore all user apps" and they will all come back. you can choose to also restore user data since youre staying on froyo, it should be all good (all of my restores were) but if you do go to gingerbread later, dont restore froyo user data back over that or it can cause trouble. but thats for another time.

and yes i am talking about skipping part 2 and installing 9.5 directly using CWM - all you were doing by flashing 9.2 was just getting the base Froyo onto the phone and overwriting the stock Eclair.

as far as copying data to the phone in mass storage mode, dont use Kies etc. go into settings>application>development and enable USB debugging. now, when you plug your phone into USB instead of that multi choice menu for Kies, etc, you will get a notification that USB is plugged in. drop down your notifications and there will be an option to "connect via USB" - choose that, and presto, the phone will talk to your computer, and appear as a removable drive in mycomputer. now simply drag and drop your CWM files across, when done, unplug and youre ready to rock
