maverick: I have seen the same same for Cisco PAP2-NA's that's why we ban them from our network..... Being sold by some scum dealers on trademe for next to nothing.

No help from Trademe when pointed out to them I must say , they weren't interested, not a fan of trademe anymore as they were happy to let customers buy known counterfeit devices

There were issues with ex Vonage SPA devices as well that all had the same MAC. The only way they could get around the service provider locks was to do some sort of reflash that game them all the same MAC. Genuine Linksys device but hopeless for all intent purposes!

The mac address thing doesnt bother me to much, but the video reviews I've watched online, show it as really really laggy, thats the only thing stopping me from getting one in, they're dirt cheap.

Agree with you about TradeMe. They are now firmly in the grip of a foreign multi-national that doesn't give a rat's arse.

One vendor has been selling Android tablets on there that claim to do "600GHz".

The trader is "empress-int"...and they blacklisted me for trying to tell them they were claiming 2,000 times the actual speed. The devices actually do 300MHz.

Beware that trader.

I reported the errors to TradeMe and they have carried on for weeks.

It was only when some other big traders took interest that things got sorted out.

TradeMe couldn't give a dry, flakey crap about ordainry users anymore.

I now put stuff on Sella.co.nz first...not that APN is any better. I'm under no illusions there.

They can be really laggy.....unless you get the right firware on there. have a look at the video I posted in this forum yesterday (ECOTOX v1.1.1). Not lightning....but not laggy crap either.

Indeed we do! :) We are off overseas from tommorow so will be taking the tablet for use with free wifi etc on our travels (Melbourne, Sydney and Bali).  Now I just need to find a pillowcase to wrap it in, since I have no decent case for it. :)

rocky289: So is mine.
But a question, how do you open a command prompt?
I'm a windows person, so this is a bit foreign to me.

Install the "Better Terminal" app. It's free in the Market. If you can't access the Market from the device and you don't have an android phone to copy it off of.....let me know and I'll email you the *.apk file.

I only send free ones....so don't ask for any paid apps. :-)

If you read the slatedroid forum for the ECOTOX ROM, a guy there seems to have worked out how to make the Android Market 100% functional on these devices.....and he's looking at putting together a firmware that  includes the fix...so if you can't coax the Market to work via the work-around, then time may solve the problem.

Funny you say to install from the Market... "Market" is proprietary and only available to licenced partners and members of the Open Handset Alliance. Google is not happy about Market being used on the Augen tablet.

chiefie: Google said Augen Tablet is using pirated Android. http://www.gottabemobile.com/2010/08/06/google-150-augen-tablet-using-pirated-version-of-android/

Android itself is open source and can't be "pirated" but some bits are proprietary software and are being used without a proper licence.

Oh, yes, Google does have proprietary software, any surprise there?

No. They asserted their ownership of their apps back when Cyanogen got his cease and desist letter because he had included Google Apps with his ROMs. They worked out a deal and it holds. No issues at all with Google asserting their ownership of their apps.

Chinese manufacturers are habitual ignorers of such things...and it doesn't surprise me these cheap tablets are excellent examples of the typically piratical Chinese business ethic.

Kinda fun to watch. :-)

Many / most of these apps are available through alternate markets, like Slideme, anyway, placed their by their developers. Then you have the Chinese android app markets that sell software they don't give the developer any money for. Piratical again.

Lest there is any confusion, I agree absolutely anyone selling devices with Google's proprietary software on it should do so with the appropriate arrangements in place....if for no other reason than to protect people who buy their products in good faith.

Western companies will have to either build the cost of checking on cheating Chinese suppliers in their business model (cleary - many don't check at all) ....or get supplies from honest suppliers who don't lie, cheat and steal.

Cyanogen's ROMs were in a grey area because he doesn't charge anything - it's free - and his ROMs were for use - exclusively - on phones that already came with Google's proprietary apps.

And I actually missed one important point too: although Android is "open source" it also can be "pirated", if the company using the software doesn't follow the licence available...

Have to say, most of the cheap chinese android tablets are made similarly. My son bought one of the dealextreme ones and the market app has the same ID as every other one so of course Market doesnt work.
Had to update the rom and replace the market app to get it going, luckily i knew i had to do that before buying so was fine :)
