I'd just downloaded what appears to be the latest update to the EKEN (and OEM) "M001" class of Android tablets: v1.9.0.

It's lunch time. I'm gonna flash it. Wish me luck.

If it's any good, I'll post the link or if you can't wait, go to slatedroid.com and find the thread.

I was concerned I might point people at rubbish....but several now appear to have flashed it and it seems OK so far.

The thread is here.

It flashed OK, but the entire touch pad was unresponsive  99% of the time, really struggled to get it to recognise a tap or swipe....trying going back and forwad again, let me know if anyone finds this, and a fix?

V1.9.0 loaded up OK.

It's a definitely improvement on the stock software.....but not as good as ECOTOX v1.3.1  with Home++ UI and 96MB swap file on SD and fully functioning Android Market....and root so you can fix other stuff as required.

Flashing back....Been there.....done that.  If you don't want custom firmwares and only want to run stock, then the upgrade is worthwhile.

It took a few minutes to start working....then suddenly did.

Also...the touchpanel calibration MUST be done as it seems to be out by almost a centimeter in some cases.

Don't use your finger. use something with a precise point, like a stylus (or whatever - it just needs a fine tip) to nail those crosshairs right in the centre.

Touchpanel is working OK now. I'm backing up the few apps I DO want from this build (YouTube, Tudou)...so I can copy them over and install them on ECOTOX after I flash.

The YouTube won't work unless you create an account in the "APP Market" and download the "YouTube Support"  something-or-other in the APP Market, but installs as "WEB FLV".

It's free and YT won't work without it. It supports HD and plays fullscreen...so worth getting.

I used the gmail address I associate with the m001 - one I *only* use with the m001. It just wants email, name and a password. Gmail is pretty good at filtering out spam, so I gave it a real address.

I then backed the app up and will install it on ecotox later.

I flashed away...and back again...and the same thing happened. The touchpanel became unresponsive seconds after boot....then once I used the device in portrait mode, it returned. It's like it needs to be reset by going to portrait and back.

Ok...so I backed up the 29 apps on the M001's v1.9 firmware.

I installed ECOTOX v1.3.1 firmware and it used the swap partition on the SD immediately.

I re-did the accounts.db fix to get the Android Market functioning 100%.

I then installed the v1.9 YouTube app plus the Youtube support files from the "other' market....and now I have YouTube working 100% on ECOTOX v1.3.1, playing fullscreen and supporting HD format.

I think...based on a the past few weeks messing around....that this is about as good as it gets on the M001.....

I've kind of composed my own version of the ECOTOX v1.3.1 custom firmware, but replaced all the hardware drivers with those from the official v1.9 update.

It certainly hasn't hurt it any...and the video feels a little faster. YouTube is smoother. The wifi definitely connects faster.

We have been using our m001 in Bali (where I am currently typing this from) but I must say this device is moRe frustrating and slow, than useful and handy. Have decided to sell this M001 when we get back and get a couple of iphones instead.

All right, since its Friday, new toy.

First, I'm a big fan on Android (run a Leshak 2.08 custom rom, with Android 2.1 on my i5700 Sammy)
but, i've tried EVERY load for the Eken/M001, and I AGREE with Linuxluver, Ecotox, with a swap on SD card is the business, quite responsive, but I was never patient enough to get the market fix working, and on my Sammy, its wifi tethering is setup as Ad-hoc, rather than infrastructure, so Android tablet cant see it (looks like the dev guys are working on it, but only for HTC so far)

So long story cut short, i tried the (ugh, here we go, ill say it) Windows....CE 6.00 load from Helplessness, here http://www.slatedroid.com/eken-m001-windows-ce/2763-%5Bwin-ce%5D-hopelessness-edition-v0-3b-ce-tweaks-5.html

its a bit fiddly to get the screen calibrated at first, but you a get a feel for it after a few times :O)
run all the reg tweaks etc and its not too bad.

its quite quick, it feels familiar, the wifi just works and getting your usual docs etc on it isnt hard,

another one for the Eken followers to have a crack at

You on ECOTOX with a swap file yet? :-)

With the drivers from the v1.9 firmware update, it's just a *little* bit better on the keyboard. But stylii do help. Finger tips seem to impose an added burden on the processor: "Did he really touch that?"
