On your specifications it seems the X10 mini / mini pro would be the most obvious choices seeing as they both come in xt versions and are pretty cheap from mobicity. Of course the screen size may be a problem but i think that is personal preference the keyboard is certainly handy.
Personally i don't really like the SonyEricsson custom UI but it does work well on such a small screen and can be changed with adw launcher etc.
My girlfriend however loves the small size and keyboard format (hence she bought one), so may be best to go to a vodafone store to check one out and see if the wife likes the small size and screen.
Certainly big enough for texting emailing and facebook, has a pretty good camera too noticably better than my HTC Magic's. It also seems more responsive and less laggy in fact it hasnt really lagged doing anything yet.
Lastly unlike a few other entry level phones it will be getting 2.1 (eclair) in sept/oct and 2.2(froyo) possibly before the end of the year

But note, that 2.2 is only if you root it.
If she wants to keep it as stock then she will be running 1.6.

I do agree though, the HTC Dream is the phone that started it all off, and it is still a great phone. I don't think it comes in a XT Variant though (2100MHz only if I recall correctly)

I'm saving up for a Desire... I'm gonna bite the bullet and do it properly I think.

joff_nz: However, XT has 850 'everywhere' and only 2100 for capacity in main centres. For Mrs Joff, 850 would be acceptable

The Rogers "HTC Hero" would be acceptable. Rogers is a Canadian cellco.

They are being upgraded to Android v2.1, too.  The Hero is the big brother of the HTC Magic....with higher spec and more RAM (288MB, IIRC).

These are really coming down in price as they are close to end of life.

The dream looks like it would be a great choice actually, but I also can't see an XT friendly version.

I think a physical keyboard is a real bonus, so the Hero is probably not quite right, again unless it was a particular bargain. Mobicity has it around $900. For that money theres other phones we'd rather have, but thanks for your suggestion

The Samsung 5700 looks like a great phone for the money ($400ish) but as far as i can see is not XT friendly.

The Dream is really a Vodafone phone.
