jords12:
I preordered two from them on sept 25th... any idea how likely to be in first shipment? Don't really want to bother them myself, I'm sure they have a ton of people beating down their door to find out when their phones are going to be shipped :)

They were non-committal about that, just saying that they didn't know how many phones were coming in that first shipment and that they had a LOT of pre-orders.

I tried to pin them down for an indication of when I could expect mine to be shipped (this makes a difference of whether I want it shipped to NZ or elsewhere) but the best they could do was to say "there is a good chance" I'd have it by this time next month.

http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2010/10/20/htc-desire-hd-available-right-now-online-in-uk/

HTC Desire HD now available for order from the UK!!

399 GBP or NZ$842 (at current exchange rate) from www.clove.co.uk
plus 15% tax = NZ$968.30

Shipping = 20 GBP or NZ$42

Voucher code "HTCFLY5500" gets you 5 GBP or NZ$10.50 off the total price so...

Total of NZ$999.80 including shipping*

compared with NZ$1188.90 including shipping from www.mobicity.co.nz

*May be cheaper still if you're not pinged for tax by customs.

Why is NZ not more excited about this phone?!?!

Very helpful. I'm not more excited because I haven't seen a full formal review yet. Is the screen SLCD or LCD or none of the above? Is the protruding camera lens an issue or a sitter for being scratched? How does the smaller battery capacity (e.g. vs. the original Desire) perform?

Clove have not updated their site from pre-order status. The Z has been put back to 29th October. Expansys UK are already shipping them out, as are some of the European sites.

It's hard to get really excited about this phone when there are few reviews. Its the GSM version of HTC Evo and that alone is enough to give pause (reviews about battery life were abysmal). What info has come about about the Desire HD has been contradictory. HTC originally said it would have an SLCD screen. Now its just LCD. I'm sure excitement will come IF the reviews are good.

You can read all about peoples experiences with the phone over at xda under the new desire hd general section. From what I can gather, the battery life is not that great, the screen appears to be sharp and vivid so most likely slcd and people are very upset about the proximity sensor errors that have become apparent. Basically when the phone is answered during a call the screen will go blank and refuse to turn back on until the battery is pulled or a bright light is shone onto it? Let's hope this is a software error.
Apart from these complaints people are rather happy with the purchase it seems.

Also HTC is supposedly shipping stock out today to all the retailers that have not recieved any, including clove. However the supply is well under the demand of the phone, consequently many people will have to wait till november to get a hold of one.

HTC has confirmed that the screen is definitely LCD (not SLCD).

Amazon UK put back their release date today, to 15th November. I guess the proximity sensor problems may be causing more delays. I understand HTC are aware of this and according to the xda thread its been escalated to management.

I've been a huge fan of HTC phones for years and they've never let me down yet. My original HTC Pocket PC still works without issues and my iMate JAM (rebranded HTC Magician) was in use every day for 5 years (the last couple just as an ebook reader & emergency back-up phone when my phones died) until a couple of weeks ago when my Kindle arrived. So if the proximity sensor issues are just software problems that doesn't worry me a bit. If its a hardware problem I hope more information comes out before phones get shipped out from Clove - otherwise swapping over will be a pain.

Got a little ahead of myself... clove now states "First stock now shipping. More stock due 24th and 26th October"

Good news: Clove just dispatched my order :) yus!
Bad news: They dispatched it using DHL instead of my requested royal air mail option so gst is going to have to be paid.. argh

Thanks. Would rather wait for endgadget et al. to do a proper review ...

Well they gave the hd7 a 6/10 for being just like the hd2 pretty much. I'm guessing they will be harsh on this phone too because it's similar to the htc evo (and not an iphone lol) or maybe just pull a gizmodo and not review it because they don't want too hah

I was charged $1048 for the desire hd, does this mean gst was already taken out prior to me even being notified? Anyone else been charged yet?

Engadget reviews are utter rubbish, and everyone who really knows mobile phones knows it. Await reviews from better sites like GSMarena/techradar etc if you're holding on for reviews before pulling the trigger.

Lol thanks for this. Hence my "et al." ... I usually try to do my own IMDB/Rottentomatoes take on the reviews.

I'd check the invoice to make sure VAT was not accidentally included.  If it was, contact Clove quickly so the refund comes through at pretty much the same exchange rate.

When I placed my order VAT was included on the invoice automatically, despite the delivery address being NZ. I wasn't concerned at the time due to the possibility of me needing to change the delivery address to the EU. However, when it shipped last night the order was charged with VAT included. Clove refunded the VAT within an hour of charging. They are actioning the orders as quickly as they can and not necessarily noticing the invoice price.

They don't act as agents for GST collection.

I might have too, especially since there have been a couple of problems reported. However the issues appear to be software-related and past experience with HTC phones leads me to feel any software glitches will be fixed quickly. Also, I gave my Desire away to a family member after I ordered the HD & have been stuck using a borrowed iPhone 3G. I can't wait to give that back!

If I still had my HTC Desire I would have cancelled the HD order. Android 3  (Gingerbread) is coming soon - in either 3 weeks or January, depending on who is writing about it. If there is no real need to grab a new phone now then waiting to see what comes with the Gingerbread release is probably worthwhile.
