nzkiwiboy: ok thanks guys, and that photo wasn't that bad.

and does the phone lag sometimes? is the internet fast?
my brother says android phones muck up quite a lot.

The CPU in the 845 isn't particularly fast, but it's fast enough for most basic things.. "the speed of "the internet"" has more to do with what your connection is like than the phone itself..

I don't know what phone your brother has, by android itself doesn't "muck up quite a lot"

It's usable but I haven't tried other phones.
It has got just wireless g and half the mobile broadband speed of the ideos.
Wireless n would also be more robust and have better coverage (at least with my routers).
But it's definitely useful, including watching youtube. The worst is typing, almost impossible (although you can use anything plastic to type, unlike capacitive screens, so they say). The audio quality is extremely poor when you connect the phone to an amplifier. The audio from the phone itself is quite weak too.
The truth is, I can live with those limitations, until the next phone.

I forgot to mention, it's really slow at switching from portrait to landscape, it takes many seconds to realize, despite the accelerometer not having particular problems (you can play games with it).
That's really frustrating. I wonder if that lag can be tweaked somehow

well he works at vodafone and gets a lot of complaints from android users.

ok, i don't think i'll have many problems with the keyboard, my mum has a phone with really small letters, i manage to do ok, and i have the fingers of an 8 yr old.

would you recommend the vodafone 845 ?

The 845 seems slow to me (menus) compared to more expensive phones, also I thought the screen was horrible, having a nice big screen was important to me, I was looking forward to watching training videos in my lunch break. Was happy to splash out a bit on an HTC Trophy $780 new on trademe. All depends how much you want to spend, but this phone is impressive for the price, but screens are very impartant.

For the price I don't think you can get anything better than the 845. It even has custom roms you can flash to improve things. I think probably the two worst things with it are the screen only being 320x240 and also resistive touch.

Well, comparing the 845 to a HTC Desire (Z), the 845 is ^Wcrap. But I paid $175 for the 845 vs $820 for the HTC Desire Z..
So, you're paying 4x the amount for a Desire Z. The Desire Z is awesome. The 845 is a cheap android phone. For the price, you get an awesome phone in the 845. If you want "an awesome phone" you're going to be forking out $800-$1100 NZ.

So yeah, for the price, the 845 is a great phone. Is it a great smartphone? No, it's not.
It has a slowish processor, not much ram and a pretty crap screen. But it's $199.

Andriod as an OS is phenomenal and there are many amazing phones, I would say that he gets a lot of complaints because your average user will have issues with a smartphone, it took me a few days to find out how to do most things. I can imagine your average Joe/not technically minded person having some issues with these phones.
They are great for geeks though :D

;) Well depends what you expect for a smartphone for $199. For that price, it's goddamn awesome. BUt like I said, it's an entry level smartphone. I own a 845 and an HTC Desire Z. Compared to the Z, the 845 is shi^Wcrap but again, I paid 4x the 845 for the Desire Z

@ nzkiwiboy

Just some small insite for you to help you make up your mind.

I am a self confessed gadget geek. I like all things gadgety.
I have a Nexus one and it is my first smart phone, this is the first time I have spent over $400 on a phone. I must say I am blowen away. I did have a choice of an iPhone but personaly did not like it compaired to the Nexus.

I have recently brought  the 845 for my wife and secretly for me to muck around with ;).
She has always had moto and sammy as her preferd phones, very basic phones at the time that did what she needed them to do.
She was in the market for a new phone after her old one crapped out. So I thought rather than spending the $200 on a standard phone we would give the 845 a try.
Now remember her experiance with phones are limited to your every day run of the mill phone.
In her words "This is the best phone I have ever had", regarding using the 845 for nearly a week now.
Yes she has had a play with my nexus one and yes she likes it, but she has a true understanding of value for money.

So all in all what I would take from this is that, sure an 845 will not be for the high end gadgety person, but if you are new to smart phones and/or have a limited budget then this phone would suit anyone.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
P.

i think i'd love the vodafone 845. im just a bit weary about it cause i had a vodafone 715, the camera wasn't as good and i couldn't change the theme, internet was slow.
