rez: Anyone know if the DSE $175 deal comes with the $200 vodafone credit offer?

It's under the required $199.....so doesn't qualify. If you want the offer, buy the phone via Vodafone online....where it costs $199. You effectively pay $24 for the $200 credit.

Check out the conditions of the offer first though, from memory it can only be used for calls and not data and there is a time limit so it's not just an open $200 credit.

MS Exchange email on this phone is set up in the usual way: add a "Corporate" account in Accounts & Sync.

To actually read/write/use the Exchange account email, use the "360 EMail" app Vodafone has included.  I was looking for the "Email" app and couldn't find it and it isn't the Market...so tried "360 EMail"...and there was all my Exchange mail from work.

Done a quick search and couldn't see any vouchers?

Try searching for 'vodafone credit'....there are plenty and dirt cheap too unfortunately.

I wasn't able to see the phone's bundled "PC Suite" because I had put an sdcard into the phone immediately. So when I connected the phone to the PC, I was only able to see the contents of the sdcard, not the phone's internal "udisk".

I removed the sdcard and connected the phone to the PC and was then prompted to install the bundled PC Suite from the phone's internal "udisk". I sent an SMS from the PC via the tethered phone. That's nice. It also appears to support USB tether to the Internet using the phone as a 3G modem. The PC I tried it on was Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)...so it was good to see the drivers and the SMS worked. I'll have to the Internet tether some time.

But for anyone who buys this phone, connect it up the pc before you put an sdcard into it or you won't see the PC Suite. Also the file transfer will only be between the udisk and the PC, which may explain why the music player wasn't able to see the music as it would - typically - be looking for it on the sdcard.

I had a better/longer play with a VF 845 today, I'm still pretty new to touch screens but this was terrible, was almost impossible to write anything accurately, too small, I'm crossing it off my list now. Even the Galaxy 580 didn't seem that great. The HTC Trophy was the best I tried today, it was awesome.

A small stylus fixes the fat-finger vs small-screen problem, I've found. I have about 8cm of a plastic knitting needle I use for this. :-)

There are also 3 different keyboard layouts...some better than others.  Swipe left and right to try them out.

I picked one up today, I quite like it but it seems I've broken it already :) I was trying to put a new firmware on it and had just cleared it (using AmonRA) but it wouldn't format the SD card correctly, telling me to do it through adb. I've rebooted it and the phone works fine, but I can't get the drivers to work with Windows anymore, and for some strange reason the CD drive that Windows finds when you plug the phone in without an SD card installed is empty. Could someone please do me a huge favour and zip up the drivers from that CD drive, I'm kind of stuck without it. Didn't take me long to break it! :)

Re: the skype thing, did you side load the cracked version?

There are a couple of similar apps in the Market which use the api aren't there?

Thanks heaps rez, you're a champ.

Unfortunately I'm still having problems, it's still not detecting the phone properly and I can't even mount the sdhc card in Windows (but the phone can read it fine). Part of the problem is that I deleted the data before I tried to change the firmware, apparently the ISO image that contains the drivers etc lives in /data, so that's why it got toasted.

Why I can't mount the sd card I'm not sure, I might have to try to either do a full firmware restore tomorrow or get an micro-SD adapter so that I can put it in my PC directly and copy across a new firmware.

To get to the stock recovery menu on the Vodafone 845, do the following:

From power off state

Hold down 'Call' (left-most button) and 'Vol-Up'....and while holding them, press Power and release Power.

The phone will boot into a recovery menu allowing you to perform a factory reset.

You move the cursor up and down the menu by swiping the optical sensor..and press the optical sensor to select an option.

So I got the 845 for my wife. it is a great phone for the price, but the lack of notification LED, and poor screen (compared to much more expensive devices) mean that I wont be stealing it any time soon.
I tried two audible notification apps but they were not visible in the market for the 845 (there for my magic).

Do the apps work on the 845 if you sideload the apps you installed on the Magic?

(I use Appmonster Pro to backup non-protected *.apk files and then you can install them on anything. "Non-protected" usually means free, so no piracy involved.)
