You want "barcode scanner". It's an app in the Market. Android usually needs it - or one like it - to read bar codes.

Oh yeah I had the app, it seems that I've managed to get a few QR codes to read (not yours though), and I still haven't got it to read any barcodes. I think it might just be that the lens isn't that great I suppose.

Interesting. :-)

To make mine bigger, did you "Cntl +" to make the browser page larger? That seems to work for most people. Then "Cntl -" to make it smaller again.

UPDATE: I've tried my QR-vatar with the 845 and the Galaxy S...and it doesn't work. I think it used to....but probably time for a new avatar anyway. :-)

1. I always take those screen protectors off. They get grimey with finger oil in a few days...and interfere (IMHO) with the use of the touch screen. Just kep you phone in a soft place free of grit, food, keys and other hard objects and the screen should stay like new. I keep mine either in my shirt pocket or my trousers (front) pocket - solo. Nothing else in there. As I move, the cloth polishes the screen. :-)

If I have to, I'll keep in a Glad zip-lock snack bag...and then I can toss it in amongst anything.

You can turn data on if Menu -> Settings -> Wireless & Networks. Have a look around in there. Better to get some data though. On VFNZ pre-pay 500MB is only $30 / month. On 2Degrees, you can get 1GB for $20 that lasts 30 days (use it or lose it). It's cheap.

Has anyone got any updates on the custom roms? I am thinking about having a dabble but am not sure a) What I'm doing and b) which of the variants is the best currently.

I have read that the Mr Edition one doesn't have Wifi working but that one seems to be moving quite fast.

Any help appreciated, I am getting to quite like this phone after installing ADW launcher and messing about for a while it's pretty good. Even flogged the Nokia 5800!

I tried out Mr Edition but the wifi wouldn't start for me, I then installed Celestial Teapot and everything works beautifully. You need to be a little careful when first "rooting" the device, you can kill it if you're not careful (as long as you follow the instructions you'll be fine).

The CT ROM came with LauncherPro installed by default, I've since installed the Zeam launcher (developed by some of the people on the xda forums) which I've found to be a bit quicker. I've also started using appbrain.com for all my application downloads, it has a much nicer interface than the standard Android store - you can choose what apps to download using your PC's web browser then have the device sync all the apps you've chosen.

This might seem a daft question but what's different about it, I guess it's rooted and has apps2SD but is there anything else that's worth noting (I'm thinking major pluses rather than a list of all changes)?

Suppose my question is really "Is it worth it?"

I use a combination of the power widged (which lets you turn off the Wi-Fi and GPS and APNdroid app which is a cool widget which deactivates your APN (3g data) at the touch of a button.

Yeah I did zoom in but it doesn't seem to like your QR code at all, however the ones on the appbrain site it reads straight away.

It's cause hacking's cool. But in all seriousness, i did it for the overclock mod, some tweaks that make it run faster and it helps me understand the device better. I haven't bothered with apps2sd yet but i might try that next.

Same here. The resolution of the avatar must be too low. Time for a new one, then, if no one can read it. :-)

I was using the thread linked earlier in this thread see here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=802893
you will need to register an account for the forum so that you download one of the OC'ed roms.
I'm running the TCT_691200_update.zip which runs at 691.2mhz but some people have gone higher with no instability so feel free to experiment :)

DSE are still running their special at the moment, I picked up the 845 for $175 and it came with the $200 calling credit code too.

At $175 I would say buying an new phone would be cheaper than an LCD replacement.

I've never broken or scratched my phones. The best and cheapest protection is a careful owner. Otherwise the phone is always at risk. :-)
