AliMac: Just bought this phone which is my first smart phone as well as android phone so am a bit of a noob at the technical side of things.

When you say there is backup tools available, do you mean in the app store or they have have to downloaded elsewhere.

So far from my limited searching it looks like you need to root the phone first in order to back up the firmware.

Also of note, there appears to be a new 2.2 firmware for the asia region available on samfirmware.com, I'm not sure if anyone has tried it yet.  Not sure if it would fix the issues with compass or not.

Do we fall under Asia or USA for the firmware? As friendCrumpet mentioned there is an Asia version out as well so can I use this for NZ or does it not matter as the APN settings are independant?

I am hoping of getting this phone in the boxing day sales as my first Andriod. The Warehouse has 25% off phones so it would be good to get it for close to the $200 mark if possible.

I am sure anything is better than my LG500F which I cant even get Exchange email on.

Well I finally got my phone from DSE yesterday that I ordered on Xmas day with their online special of $191 including XT sim. first thing I did was upgrade to 2.2 as per the instructions here (Thanks Nitrotech)

It was stright forward and after changing from spanish to english and putting in the Telecom APNs I was away laughing.

Was very lucky too as about 30min later we had a drunk driver who was being chased by the police take out the power pole and the overhead phone lines and unfortunately my parked car on the side of the road :(

Phone lines still down so thankfully upgraded to 2.2 as now using tethering on the laptop for the net access. Must say flys along with XT and dont notice much difference from normal broadband!

Pic of my poor Alfa and the damage that the stupid drunk driver caused. Two weeks out from my wedding as well when I need a car to get around and get things done. Grr

Did try that as well and phone didn't like it. They both say that phone has been successfully rooted but actually doesn't change phone at all.

Decided to pick one of these up to add to my collection too, it's like a baby brother to my Galaxy S, even more so than my other i5700 Spica!

The WiFi AP and AllShare look like they ahve been directed copied from the Galaxy S(apart from AllShare missing one feature) but I can say for $249 + Sim from Dick Smith, it's an amazingly good deal. And the 2GB SD instead of the 1GB SD that most overseas users, is most welcome :)

I did read on the XDA thread of someone having to kill all the running tasks possible before the root would work.  However worked for me fine using the Universal Androot without having to kill anything.

Finally after uninstalling and then reinstalling universal root then using task killer (the stock task manager in froyo doesn't seem to pick up running apps like ATK can) I managed to get it to root.

Warming up to Froyo now but initially wasn't so sure as it seemed to make phone clunky and lagged a bit but either I got used to it or it isn't do that the same. I now find though that I can't open Gallery as it goes black screen, does the vibrate and noise warning thing and the force close screen comes up.

FYI a new rom has been created that sorts out the battery drain issue:

Download here

Don't rename just select it as the single package and upgrade through odin, I have just done the upgrade so will let you know over the weekend how the battery is going.

Edit: credit to XDA-developers for this

Oh man having just done the upgrade and reinstalling all my apps, I don't think I could bear doing a hard reset again!  I'm currently using CPU tuner which supposedly sets the governor to ondemand.  If they fix the compass issue I might consider upgrading again...

Is that Froyo still?
I'm on the US version too and left it on overnight, sometime overnight it shut down....so less than 10 hours, but I guess I'm still conditioning the battery and being used to 1500mAH batteries in my Spica and Galaxy S might be comparing apples to oranges with the 1200mAH in the 5503

Will try the new room when I get home I think :)
