Damn, NFC is sounding more and more like a fail....Nexus S the only device to have it?  With the London Olympics coming up and the iPhone 5 as well not supporting it, guess Visa has given up on it?

I think that's the proximity sensor?  Looks too dark to be a flash, I could be wrong though

Hi all, anyone know when this phone is likely to arrive in NZ or be sold by NZ retailers? Also, if you order from Clove today will you still get it in the shipment?

Cheers

I mean it lit up rather than was a flash, might have just caught the light in the sensor?

Actually I think you might be right!
Looks like a message/call warning LED, if so, that's awesome :) that's exactly what I missed in my original Galaxy S!

Just received yesterday:

Samsung announces the GALAXY S II, the world’s thinnest smartphone that will let you experience more for less

Samsung’s most powerful smartphone delivers unmatched performance with a dual-core application processor and excellent viewing experience by Super AMOLED Plus display in a sleek and lightweight design

AUCKLAND, April 27, 2011 – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, announced the Samsung GALAXY S II (Model: GT-I9100), a beautifully thin (8.49mm) and lightweight, dual-core smartphone that combines a superb viewing experience with incredible performance.

The Samsung GALAXY S II uses Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the latest version of the world’s fastest-growing mobile operating system. The next generation smartphone includes access to Samsung’s four new content and entertainment hubs, seamlessly integrated to provide fast access to music, games, e-reading and social networking services.

"In 2011, we will take Samsung’s leadership in speed, screen and content to a whole new level,” said Stefan Lecchi, Head of Telecommunications Samsung New Zealand. "With the GALAXY S II, Samsung wants to set the new standard of quality viewing on smartphones, powerful performance and slim and modern design.”

“GALAXY S II is a natural and powerful evolution of GALAXY S. Building on the phenomenal success of the original Samsung GALAXY S, we are proud to unveil our ultimate smartphone. Consumers no longer have to contain themselves – the Samsung GALAXY S II allows them to design their own smart lives.”

"We're pleased to see Samsung bring another Android-powered device to market to help grow the Android ecosystem," said Andy Rubin, Vice President of Engineering at Google.

Powerful Performance

Incorporating a dual-core application processor and advanced wireless network (HSPA+ 21) connectivity (up to 21mb per second download), the Samsung GALAXY S II has the speed and power to provide an unrivalled mobile performance. The dual-core application processor delivers compelling features such as fast web browsing, multi-tasking comparable to a PC-like environment, supreme graphics quality on the large screen. The GALAXY S II also delivers seamless multitasking, switching between applications quickly. Superior 3D hardware performance makes games and video incredibly fast and smooth.

The super-fast HSPA+ connectivity, the GALAXY S II offers rapid mobile download speeds while BlueTooth® 3.0+HS can considerably reduce data transfer times.

The Samsung GALAXY S II has been equipped with an 8MP, high-profile camera and camcorder with 1080p full HD recording and playback. With Samsung’s patented AllShareTM technology, customers can capture, create and then share their experiences between compatible televisions, laptops and desktop computers.

A Next Level of Viewing Experience

The Samsung GALAXY S II has been equipped with Samsung’s new superby clear Super AMOLED Plus screen, the most advanced mobile visual display available. Setting the standard of quality viewing on mobile, Super AMOLED Plus introduces an excellent colour gamut, contrast ratio and edge sharpness. Using RealStripeTM screen technology and a greatly increased sub-pixel count, Super AMOLED Plus complements the mechanics of the human eye to recognize images increase clarity and see more detail than ever before. With a wide viewing angle and increased outdoor visibility, the Samsung GALAXY S II provides a more vibrant viewing experience than any other mobile device.

Even with its excellent performance, the innovative Super AMOLED Plus display does not compromise battery performance. A significant reduction in power consumption from Super AMOLED display means it is also more energy-efficient than other comparably-sized devices, allowing Samsung to minimise the device weight.

Samsung GALAXY S II Goes to Work

Samsung has introduced a new range of enterprising mobility solutions, expanding the business capabilities of the Samsung GALAXY S II and helping enterprising customers empower a flexible and connected mobile workforce. Samsung has partnered with other IT industry leaders to offer the most relevant enterprise solutions to the Samsung GALAXY S II, working seamlessly on the Android Gingerbread platform and paying special attention to securing data and network. These solutions include enhanced conferencing and connectivity services from Cisco, a comprehensive mobile implementation of Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and secure remote device management from Sybase.

The New World of Entertainment and Smart Interaction

Samsung has selected the Samsung GALAXY S II as its premium mobile product with which to launch Samsung Hubs – integrated mobile applications designed to fit every element of your life. With Samsung Hubs, the Samsung GALAXY S II delivers rich catalogues of books and magazines, music, advanced mobile games and control of your online social life, all from a single device.

• Social Hub Premium: The future of communication – talk to whoever you want, however you want, all from one place – your contact list. Communication history, IM status and updates from social networking sites are all readily available. From here, users can access all types of messages (email, text, VM and SNS) and respond directly without resorting to individual applications. It truly acts as a hub for your social life.
• Readers Hub: Carry an enormous library of books, magazines and newspapers on-the-go. Through strategic partnerships, Samsung Readers Hub can support over 2.2 million books and novels, 2,000 global and local newspapers in 49 languages and 2,300 popular magazines in 22 languages, including 100 New Zealand newspapers and a number of local magazines.
• Game Hub: The easy way to download and play best-in-class mobile games. Featuring a 3-axis gyroscopic sensor, the Samsung GALAXY S II unleashes a world of gaming possibilities. Try for free and download premium titles from partners like Gameloft, or enjoy Social Network Games (SNG) powered by mobage including Ngmoco's ‘We Rule’ and ‘We City'.

The Samsung GALAXY S II gives customers many choices in personalising their smartphone experience. New for the Samsung GALAXY S II, Samsung has introduced Live Panel, a service that aggregates live web and application contents to a single customisable home-screen. Customers can design the lay-out of their own Live Panel, online services and mobile apps to appear on-screen. SNS feeds, information and many more applications can all be embedded and accessed instantly through the magazine-like layout.

With the enhanced voice technology on the Samsung GALAXY S II, customers will be able to do more with less. From opening the app to controlling the messaging, social media, email and calling, Samsung Voice Solution recognises voice and converts it to text and vice versa. Customized Voice Translation application makes the Samsung GALAXY S II the perfect travel companion, translating voice or text into - and from - a range of languages: simply speak a word or phrase into the handset and it will translate it, with audio and text output.

For swift and simple device management, Samsung has introduced Kies Air. With Kies Air, consumers can manage their smartphone contents from their PC, via local WiFi connections. Users can download photos taken on the built-in camera, listen to music, check missed calls and send messages in the web browser on their PC. For added connectivity, WiFi Direct allows consumers to connect to wireless-enabled PCs and printers without the need for wireless access points.

No indication of price or retail availability, but I'd say it will go through Vodafone.

vinnieg: No NFC in NZ Version either :S

I look forward to the day when it's just the one version of a phone that comes out.

The omission of NFC isn't a deal breaker, more of a "Huh... ok?" moment. Besides it's unlikely that NFC would be used in New Zealand any time soon; would have been good for bragging rights though :D

I'm surprised they are saying expect it in May, way sooner than I would have expected

Since May is the official UK release I think they are probably referring to that, rather than the handsets release on Vodafone NZ. I expect it to arrive on Vodafone here several months later than May, but it would be nice to be pleasantly surprised with a timely NZ release.

Wasn't VFNZ 3-4 months late on the Nexus S? Does anyone remember how late we got the original Galaxy S compared to overseas markets? I wasn't paying attention back then. I've got an SGSII coming in anyhow but I must admit I'll be slightly annoyed if it launches here next week.

It'd probably be $1300-$1500 anyway I reckon.

I got an email update from Mobicity not long ago:

It has just been confirmed that the Galaxy SII is no longer shipping with a NFC (Near Field Communication) chip.

If you are unsure what this is, NFC is a new and relatively unutilised technology that allows the transfer of information over a short distance. It is currently used in systems such as Visa PayWave and Mastercard PayPass. It is forseen that this technology will allow phones to replace credit cards in future, but this is likely some months off and there are very few real world applications at this time. Only the Google Nexus S has an NFC chip at this time and it is unlikely that the removal of this technology from the specifications will affect the majority of consumers. For more information on NFC, see the Wikipedia entry for Near Field Communication.

Apologies for the late notice, the specifications have only just been clarified (changed) by our supplier. Normally the specs don't change this close to launch, but it seems almost the standard for this device. We hope that there won't be any other additional changes going forward but will update you prior to shipment should anything else change.

Should you need to make any changes to your order please respond to this ticket.

(Wikipedia link removed as I can't post links yet.)

Based on the available evidence, it looks like NFC isn't available anywhere on the SGS2. Not here, not for UK stock, and not for wherever Mobicity get their stock from.

At least it's not used for much yet, and there's talk of networks building NFC into SIM cards, which removes the need for dedicated hardware. It'll be interesting to see what happens as the technology matures.
