At about 2.13 in is that a LED I see flash ?? I didnt think it had one on the front?

Damn, NFC is sounding more and more like a fail....Nexus S the only device to have it? With the London Olympics coming up and the iPhone 5 as well not supporting it, guess Visa has given up on it?

Hi all, anyone know when this phone is likely to arrive in NZ or be sold by NZ retailers? Also, if you order from Clove today will you still get it in the shipment?

Actually I think you might be right!
Looks like a message/call warning LED, if so, that's awesome :) that's exactly what I missed in my original Galaxy S!

The omission of NFC isn't a deal breaker, more of a "Huh... ok?" moment. Besides it's unlikely that NFC would be used in New Zealand any time soon; would have been good for bragging rights though :D

Since May is the official UK release I think they are probably referring to that, rather than the handsets release on Vodafone NZ. I expect it to arrive on Vodafone here several months later than May, but it would be nice to be pleasantly surprised with a timely NZ release.

Wasn't VFNZ 3-4 months late on the Nexus S? Does anyone remember how late we got the original Galaxy S compared to overseas markets? I wasn't paying attention back then. I've got an SGSII coming in anyhow but I must admit I'll be slightly annoyed if it launches here next week.

I got an email update from Mobicity not long ago:

It has just been confirmed that the Galaxy SII is no longer shipping with a NFC (Near Field Communication) chip.

If you are unsure what this is, NFC is a new and relatively unutilised technology that allows the transfer of information over a short distance. It is currently used in systems such as Visa PayWave and Mastercard PayPass. It is forseen that this technology will allow phones to replace credit cards in future, but this is likely some months off and there are very few real world applications at this time. Only the Google Nexus S has an NFC chip at this time and it is unlikely that the removal of this technology from the specifications will affect the majority of consumers. For more information on NFC, see the Wikipedia entry for Near Field Communication.

Apologies for the late notice, the specifications have only just been clarified (changed) by our supplier. Normally the specs don't change this close to launch, but it seems almost the standard for this device. We hope that there won't be any other additional changes going forward but will update you prior to shipment should anything else change.

Should you need to make any changes to your order please respond to this ticket.

Based on the available evidence, it looks like NFC isn't available anywhere on the SGS2. Not here, not for UK stock, and not for wherever Mobicity get their stock from.

At least it's not used for much yet, and there's talk of networks building NFC into SIM cards, which removes the need for dedicated hardware. It'll be interesting to see what happens as the technology matures.
