Hi,

my Milestone got Android update 2.2 for about a month now. One thing always bother me is that I never got the a 3G Mobile Hotspot application come with Froyo update working. It always complain about 'cannot set up data link'?

I've already got 3GB of data allowance from Vodafone, but I am not sure not able to get tethering in WiFi is a Vodafone issue,  software configuration issue or because I bought my milestone overseas from UK?

I've got a Telecom Milestone running a leaked 2.2.1 rom and have the same problem. I did a bit of reading and it sounded like a lot of people cant get it working. I couldn't find any solutions other than install a different Rom.

I'm probably going to try CM7 soon.

Hi Bold,

From what I've read looks like the 3G hotspot is a service provided by Mobile network provider like Verizon, and it will charge extra if you are using that service, even though you already paid a mobile data plan for your smart phone. My guess is that the 3G hotspot application as part of 2.2 upgrade will not
working with vodafone NZ or telecom, even if they provide that service, they will most likely charge extra for that.

Yeah, seems like the only possible way is to root my phone, which I am not so kin to do that yet. But please let me know after you try custom Rom, that along will probably motive me enough.

I found a milestone manual somewhere online that said you need to add a separate APN with APN type = "dun". This worked for me and I'm using my milestone as a hotspot to send this right now! :-)

It doesn't matter what name you give the new APN (I chose....'hotspot') and just set all the other APN settings as per your normal 'internet' APN settings for your particular mobile provider.

I got it working too, Wow, really cool!

I am glad I didn't pay for the Pdanet, on the other hand, probably not going to root my milestone this weekend.

Looks like just need set APN type with any name rather than default should working, so don't have to be exactly 'dun'. Too lazy to test though...

I tried a nonsense name for the APN type and it didn't work.
The APN 'setting' name can be anything, the APN name within the setting should be same as your normal 'internet' APN setting, but I think the APN TYPE must be 'dun'?

It might be model specific I suppose - I've got a Milestone (1) firmware 2.2.1, on 2degrees. It's the UMTS 900 version, not the one that XT sell.

No idea, my one is not XT networks as well, Vodafone.

Also, be careful with the hotspot thing, probably unrelated, but my Milestone
just shutdown by itself and I can't turn it on anymore! Suppose I have to post it back to UK
for warranty.

I leave the hotspot opened for about 4 hours.
