So got a new S2, waiting for the sim to be activated (no service). Phone was fully charged overnight, after about 2.5 hours it has dropped to 80%. Cell standby is at 40% of battery usage, Display is second at 35%, Internet third at 10% etc. I have everything turned off under Mobile networks, as I know nothing is activated so it is just wasting battery. It seems this does not prevent the phone from trying to connect with a cell tower anyway, so is there another way? The only fix I've found so far is using flight mode which isn't really a proper solution in my book as it disables wifi as well, which I CAN use.

If phone is powered up when connection goes active it will not log onto the network, you need to repower the handset

Steve113: Finally got some time. I just  through Brendan's root instructions and rooted with CF-Root and VillainROM 3.0 for the first time and now im boredLaughing
Has anyone tried SiyahKernel v2.6 with a suitable rom?

Either Cynagen or Checkrom are the most popular choice by far. Both the lastest kk5.

Thanks, I'm going to try that.

What is the recommended rom\kernel combo here if battery life is a concern without sacrificing too much performance?

Most android veterans will says its a matter of opinion and personal use. Speedmod 18, void echo and siyah 2.1.1 are probably the front runners in terms of recommendations for kernels.

For a rom id say they are all so close to each other these days its the apps that run in the background and the init.d folder (ram tweaks, super duper fast mode blah blah) that make them a few percent better.

some tips are
-use a rom with bloatware removed it will save time freezing apps
-use betterbatterystats to find any wakelocks and either increase usage interval, turn it off or freeze it.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to install betterbatterystats
I am now running Simple & Clean v2.4.3 on Void and to be honest i am impressed with the battery life and how snappy the phone has become although it may be a bit too soon to tell....

Merry xmas.

Hey guys, having trouble with myphone.

Running lite'ning 6.1, but I am unable to change the rom to anything else - it just doesn't work! I tried using Odin to reflash back to stock, but that didn't work either - something about not being able to access XEU on the SD, or similar. Is there a foolproof guide anyone knows of for reflashing back to stock?

Using Odin, I put the firmware on the PDA section, but where does the 'kernel' go?

Seem to be stuck on 6.1 lite'ning for the time being.

hmm.. i just realized that your ROM comes with siyah kernel... for some reason, siyah 2.6.1 drains my battery quite a bit (on cyanogenmod) - ~4% per hour idling. i am back using 2.5.2b now

i will give your ROM a try on 1/1/2012, if the world has not ended yet.

You guys tried MIUI? what a great ROM that is! the themes look amazing, the web browser is far better than the stock Android one (it has tabs and back and forward buttons, you toggle between fullscreen mode), different options for the lock screen to go straight to txt's, phone, or camera (if you're using a theme that does this), ICS style datacap options so you set a limit and never go over it (you choose the day of the month to reset it). The camera crashed in video mode, but I changed the resolution to a bit lower, to something that the phone is actually capable of.. and I'm back in business. Also firewall stuff that measures how much traffic each program is using as well.. I really love it.
Oh and the music program sounds a lot better. The equaliser in the samsung music program altered the sound in funny ways. The volume was going up or down to parts of the beat, when using the Rock preset?
Theres also inbuilt phone call recording, but that produces a silent audio file for me right now...

They release an update every Friday.

Just wondering what the reason for using the XXKI4 modem in your rom is. Do you find it works best in NZ?

I did try it and it's got a nice look to it, however it didnt play my 1080p video recordings (all the other ROMS were fine) so went back to FluxMod (now on 2.0)

I've rooted my S2 using Brendan's instructions and installed CyanogenMod + Google Apps.

After making the phone reboot via CWM .. it's been displaying the 'Samsung Galaxy S II GT-I9100 (!)' screen for the last 2-3 minutes. :s

I have a nandroid that works, but ... what's up with it being 'stuck' on that screen?
