The other people here have got it a bit wrong: factory reset only wipes the data and cache partitions; it does not restore files you deleted from the system partition. (sorry guys).

You have two options:

1. find an appropriate rom on samfirmware.com (check spelling), any English one will work ok. Flash it with Odin as per my FAQ at bottom.

2. (The better option if you have CWM recovery) is download wanamlite ics from xda (or any other rom), put it on your SD card, and then install it from CWM.

Check you have CWM recovery: (power off: then hold in the volume up and home and power buttons until the samsung logo appears and then releast all three. if your recovery has 3e written anywhere on it, you do NOT have CWM and will have to use odin to flash siyah kernel 3.x then try again),

For option 2 use one of the CWM menu's to mount the sdcard for usb access in mass storage mode. That will allow you to copy your new rom to the card (it has to be on the card to install with cwm); remember where you put it. Then unmount the usb mode, and then install your new rom from the menu.

GT-I9100_WanamLite.XWLP4.V10.6.StockThemed.NO-WIPE.zip And yes I do have CWM v4.0.0.2 and I have copied this zip accross. Is it the one I want?

Yes, that is the one I am currently using myself.

That CWM is a bit outdated but should work anyway (if not or you get errors, just flash siyah 3.x with odin).

Flash the rom with the install zip menu. But before you do, do a factory reset and wipe the dalvik and cache partitions from within cwm. No need to reboot after that, just go to the install menu and flash wanam.

It'll take a few minutes, and when you reboot, it'll take a few minutes more to set up. Don't panic, give it atleast 10 minutes (should take 5).

Then set up your new system.

I also went back into cwm recovery and installed siyah 3.x. Or NEAK is also good. Optional.

Awesome, thanks much looks like I might be all go, doing the setup part now like entering google account name etc. So the siyah is the Kernel? Do I need to do this part? Seems really slow and freezy, but im up and running again at least.

Siyah is just the name of a kernel that a developer made on xda. It's one of the better ones.

Your rom may be slow as it will be scanning media and caching stuff in the background.

Patience. It's a computer, not not star trek. Give it a while to settle down etc. Make no judgements until you have used it for 5 days.

It's becoming less of a requirement to clear these manually. ROM developers know that out needs to be done, and build the wipe process onto their ROM install scripts. I can verify that the WanamLite script does clear both cache and Dalvik cache.

not sure how to do from stock but i have been using custom room forever and there is an option to wipe data from clockwork mod recovery mode.. Sorry, firefly someone else can expand

I think I saw those options when i did the Vol Up/Menu/Power startup. You mean Dalvik cache I presume? Does the factory reset do that?

Seems to be a bit of confusion here, allow me to clarify things a bit:

The three main partitions you should be concerned about is:

/system - > This is where your ROM actually lives. Once flashed, it's not modified, as it's mounted as read-only. It can only be modified by apps that request root privileges.
/data -> All the changes you make to your phone (apps, settings etc) go in here
/cache -> Used for temporary storage, like when apps are being downloaded from market, etc.

The last item you should be concerned about is dalvik-cache. This is actually a folder and it resides in the /data partition, and contains the compiled code (or dalvik bytecode, to be precise) for all the apps in your phone. In simple terms, it basically caches your apps so that they run much faster.

A factory-reset or a full-wipe basically wipes your /data (and I believe, your /cache as well). This means all your apps, settings, contacts, texts etc are wiped out. Of course, this means your dalvik-cache is wiped as well, so there's no need to manually wipe it again.

Note that your pictures, videos, music etc live in /mnt/sdcard or /mnt/sdcard/external_sd, so they'll stay safe.

When to wipe what?

Always do a factory-reset when flashing different ROMs. (different meaning, from a different developer, or different series or major builds.)
If you're simply upgrading to a newer version of a current ROM (eg, Omega 6 -> Omega 7), then you can afford to wipe just the cache and dalvik-cache, and thereby preserve your apps, settings, texts etc. Note that for some ROMs (like Omega and Wanam) will automatically do this for you. :)

Finally, read the instructions carefully on the page for your ROM. Some devs prefer to follow a slightly different procedure, and it's recommended to follow it to the letter. :)

And don't forget to take regular backups using Titanium!

Siyah is just the name of a kernel that a developer made on xda. It's one of the better ones.

I gave it like 30 mins, was still really bad. Email messege coming up all the time about it crashing etc. Did a wipe/factory reset and cleared all caches, this instantly fixed all issues I was having. Is running great now other than the total freeze requiring battery to be removed. Has not done that for a while now so should be all good.

Mine arrived. It's being fully charged right now. Very glad it was partially charge. Very happy with the fit of the back cover. My original appeared like it had a slight bulge on the side yet there was nothing there. This one fits snug all round. Very happy camper.

I have a screen cover which has the same protective film all the way round. Have been meaning to ditch it. Now the back cover doesn't have the film I think it's time to bite the bullet. I'm in two minds about removing the screen cover though. [gulp]. Hope nomiss7 has also received his kit.

I might have to let wanam know that he has redundant parts in his instructions. It's possible that he's simply based his install script on someone else's work and didn't look too hard at what it actually did.

Here are the relevant lines from the install script that wipe the system partition, cache partition and Dalvik cache:

delete_recursive("/system");
mount("ext4", "EMMC", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p7", "/cache");
delete_recursive("/cache");

I'm starting to wonder how many rom developers actually know how to make changes to their install scripts. I've seen instances where shell scripts are called to copy a few files, which is something that can just as easily be done in edify. I've seen times where a manually-edited rom requires you to flash several zip files in a row, when the rom developer could just as easily have merged everything into a single zip.

That is useful. Presumably since I had the TNZ ROM on the phone and then installed the O2 ROM (and I had nothing to keep) I should have done a factory reset then.

And when I found that the O2 ROM wasn't suitable and then put the HK ROM on, again I should have reset.

That would explain when after each ROM was installed the phone didn't look it had been wiped and it remembered the wifi WPA code. However it did not explan why after a flash and cold start, an app (game) would startup and hang the phone and cause it to reboot all the time. This I think I fixed by doing a factory reset after it hung, I powered the phone off and then went into the boot menus.

Trying to find a case to replace my OtterBox Commuter now. Doesn't seem to be easy to find something that looks good, fits well and gives the protection of the OtterBox (which is now just too tight and puts pressure on the power/volume buttons).

Thats ok.

You didn't do the factory reset before flashing the rom, did you? That is why you had all the trouble.

Wipeing it AFTER the rom flash is ok, but you may lose some of the add on apps the rom's developer included if you do it that way. Always do it before a flash.

Sometimes you can get away with no wipeing, but in MY opinion you are only asking for trouble.

Got to the market and buy the full version of titanium backup, learn to use it. very useful, essential.

Anyway enjoy ICS.
