nofam: Hooray!!  Officially in the new club. . . .purchased this morning for $697 from JB Hifi. . . .got a $50 gift voucher too!! :-)

It seems to be running KE7 too. . . . . . so what should I do first? Cool

Dunedin has a JB Hifi?  Hmmm.  Why they don't come to Christchurch I don't know.  Oh wait.  They'd be on shaky ground.

Excellent news for you, and I believe the delay is in setting up the plan :)

All you need to do is root is so you can get your apps back on.  I haven't done anything else with mine.  I'm perfectly happy with the performance and have only looked at other ROMs out of mild interest.  Each to their own, but I think I'll stick with 2.3.3 until 2.3.4 is out and then I'll flash a custom ROM.

Yeah I ended up ringing Vodafone, who said the same thing about a delay in 3g being available on a new plan.

Can you point me at the bits n bobs you used to get root?  I'm finding it annoying not even having r/w access with root explorer!!

you can try this for root....

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278

regarding your 3G coverage a new plan has nothing to do with 3G. plan is only allocation of data/texts/minutes. i would recommend go to wireless and network under settings and then check under mobile network settings what is there. it should pick up 3G where available.

The link I used has now been superseded by this one.

Make sure you have a copy of the original firmware.  I picked it up from this link.

My phone came with KE7, and I'm not sure KE8 is newer based on a comment I read on twitter (can't remember who posted it now).

ArtooDetoo:

Say, how's the sig update going there, Ms Neets. :D

The fact that you're joking about the earth moving for you, and the rest of the Christchurchians, suggessts you're relatively damage and inconvenience free. Which is a good thing.

2.3.4 is out, at least in Europe. The firmware has shown up on Samfirmware and I'm running it on my SGS1 - and it's running very nicely indeedy.

I'm a bit green with the envy monster that you have this terrific piece of kit to play with. Just gotta keep reminding myself that October isn't so very far away. I may even come to believe it eventually.

Cheers,
R2D2

Hopefully that'll put a smile on your dial (sig).
Looks can be deceiving.  If I could go, I would go.  Three properties on the eastern side and it's no longer looking like good investments for our retirement.
Yep, I've been following SamFirmware who hinted 2.3.4 was still being tested but I haven't seen them say it's released (leaked) for I9100, but it's definitely out for SGS - and flashed on Mr Neets phone on Saturday just hours after returning from our holiday.
Thankfully I've got my phone to keep me happy, and I'm still very happy with it :)
According to my countdown widget (put on especially for you) there's 109 (long) days until the 1st October.  Surprised

Definitely double-check the settings on your phone. Check Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile networks and make sure that Use packet data is turned on. (As you're not on 2degrees you don't need to worry about Data roaming.) Also check that you have all of the necessary Access Point Names defined. As you've bought your phone direct from Vodafone these should already be filled in. If not, go here to get settings sent to your phone.

If these are all set up correctly, and you're away from any known WiFi networks, the phone should automatically connect up to 3G/H when you need data.

If you're going to use mobile data, I'd recommend getting the APNdroid app. Aside from giving you a widget for quickly turning on/off mobile data from your home screens, it also allows you to use MMS connections but disable all other 3G data connections. Normally you're stuck with both, or neither.

Yeah, had already checked everything I could think off - I grabbed the config file from that link (great link by the way), but it's still not going.

Will worry about it tomorrow - person I spoke to at Vodafone said it was quite normal not to have data when going pre-pay to plan - the usual window is 8 - 24 hours.

I flashed the first version three weeks ago and haven't looked back since. Throw in a little overclocking and some undervolting and now I'm very happy.

Mate i have worked for the rival company for 5 years so I am very surprised the guy at Vodafone said that. Even when you r on prepay it is still the same thing....3G when available as long as you have 3G coverage. The only special provisioning is required by Blackberries.

Yeah it's a bid odd, but my old SGS is getting perfect 3G coverage here, and signal strength looks good etc. . . .And I doubt very much its a fault out of the box. . . .??

Yeah just tried all that - it's seeing Vodafone and Telecom, and will select the preferred one too, but under Phone => Status, it shows the Mobile network state as either Disconnected, or Connecting, which makes me think my authentication is rejecting because it's not ready etc. . . . Annoying, but I won't jump up and down until tomorrow :-)
