Is the yellow triangle visible any time other than download mode?

And thanks for the clarification, dudes.

It's there every time you boot.

I can see how that'd be annoying. So my Chainfire modded kernel must be signed then? Again, excuse my ignorance...

Thx.

If you flashed it via Odin, you should have the triangle, if you flashed via Recovery then it won't do it (assuming you came from a signed kernel to begin with).

can i root the phone and not touch anything else ie keep all the VFAU setting/rom etc so i can have access to freeze app only?

You can root the phone, then flash the original kernel back if you like (gets rid of the yellow triangle). Easy to do. No need to flash a custom firmware. Just root access will let you freeze/remove system apps.

2.3.4 could turn up tomorrow, or it could be months away, or never turn up. Depends how patient you want to be.

Odin flash, but my phone's an SGS 1, so maybe that's the reason I don't see it, or maybe Chainfire's root mods the kernel in a way that doesn't 'un-sign' it? Whichever, I don't have the yellow triangle on boot.

Guess I'd best be doing some online sleuthing.

Thanks for your answers though.

AFAIK, the SGS is quite different in this regard; the download screen on the SGS2 is quite different. The other crucial thing a jig insertion does is reset the flash counter back to 0, which would be recommended if you ever had to return the phone for warranty purposes.  Even if you flashed the completely stock VF ROM back so root etc disappeared, the flash counter would still give you away and probably invalidate your warranty.

Awesome. Thanks for the info nofam. That makes sense and the jig sounds like an indispensable tool for the keen modder. So best I order one.

i'm confused so i won't go ahead, but for the benefit of other wanting to learn too, can you tell me if my ideas are right:

according to the link above, if i just want to root and keep stock kernel (not sure if used the correct terminologies), i should IGNORE the "Flashing Firmware with ODIN" bit and go straight to "Quick Root Guide"

according to the "quick root guide",
why then do i need to flash the insecure kernel and then install superoneclick and then install busybox before i then proceed to flash the stock kernel in?

at what stage in the process above have i "rooted"?

Good idea ;-)

Used mine yesterday, easiest thing in the world to do.  I had no idea it was so simple.  Turn the phone off, wait for the vibration and BLN to turn off.  Pop in the jig and before your very eyes you're in download mode with the flash counter reset.  Couldn't be more simple.

So, when are you expecting your SGSII?

Neets:

I'm expecting 'my' HTC Sensation to arrive tomorrow or Friday with any luck. That should be interesting and much fun.

I won't be upgrading the SGS1 until October as I promised SeeThreepio that I'd keep this until the one year anniversary of its purchase. Plus my VF contract is up then and I'll be free to test various carriers's signals, deals, data and such.

Where'd you get your jig Neets?

Ta.
