joker97:according to the link above, if i just want to root and keep stock kernel (not sure if used the correct terminologies), i should IGNORE the "Flashing Firmware with ODIN" bit and go straight to "Quick Root Guide"

according to the "quick root guide",
why then do i need to flash the insecure kernel and then install superoneclick and then install busybox before i then proceed to flash the stock kernel in?

at what stage in the process above have i "rooted"?

1) Install Kies (from HERE if needed) so that the computer actually has the USB drivers to recognise the phone.

2) Download Odin from the 1st post and the XEU-KE7 kernel from the 3rd post of THIS thread.

3) Extract both archives somewhere obvious.

4) Boot your phone into "Download" mode by turning it off, then turn it back on by holding down POWER, HOME and VOLUME-DOWN.

5) Plug the phone into your PC, close Kies completely (check system tray)

6) Start Odin, ensure that there's a yellow box with COM and a number in it displayed.

7) Click the "PDA" button, select the Chainfire .tar file you extracted, ensure that "Repartition" is NOT ticked and leave everything else alone, click START.

8) Done. Assuming no errors appear, the kernel will flash and your phone will reboot with full root access.

Apologies for hijacking the thread peeps. Should've started a new one, but thanks for all the info and the jig suggestions. Hopefully the info will also be useful to real SGS 2 owners, not just wannabes like me. :D

so if I do exactly this:

(how weird all my strikethrus didnt turn up so i deleted the parts to be struckthru and replaced with ***)

Indeed - I'd say jig's are handy for habitual SGS flashers, but pretty much essential for those in SGS2 club!

The pre-rooted kernel removes the need for the SuperOneClick step. The KE7 kernel should work ok, there's a KF2 kernel in the 4th post in that thread however.

Assuming you're doing that after rooting with the Chainfire kernel to return to the stock kernel, then yes.

- Why do you suggest Chainfire instead of say Lite'ning ROM? are they interchangeable? (gosh i grew up hacking windows since i was 10 and i have grown up completely Linux iliterate!)

Lite'ning is a custom rom. The Chainfire kernel is just to give you root access and otherwise leaves everything stock.

I'm personally running Lite'ning v1.4, but stayed with stock for a few weeks first. Just root it first using the Chainfire kernel. If you then feel more adventurous flash a new rom later.

I'm with Telecom and have never had to manually change any settings to keep data, MMS etc. The first time I put my sim in it just worked, and despite flashing 3 Samsung firmwares and four Lite'ning updates I have yet to need to alter anything. :)

The security protocols in 'nix type OSes require elevated rights in order to do many file system changes and other potential security risk operations. For that reason, you must invoke super user rights to make those changes.

'Rooting' means simply that you have 'root' access to the most protected operations and most sensitive system files. Root access is available to you as a super user, which status you are granted through the rooting process.

The upside is that you can do things to modify your phone's ROM and OS. The downside, in a security sense, is that you can do things to modify your phone's ROM and OS.

If you're careful, then you'll enjoy the ability to customise almost every facet of your phone.

I'm expecting 'my' HTC Sensation to arrive tomorrow or Friday with any luck. That should be interesting and much fun.

I won't be upgrading the SGS1 until October as I promised SeeThreepio that I'd keep this until the one year anniversary of its purchase. Plus my VF contract is up then and I'll be free to test various carriers's signals, deals, data and such.

Where'd you get your jig Neets?

Where K1000716 go his/hers. That's where mine came from too, and I believe nofam ordered from the same trader. Handy little do-dad that's sitting in my cutlery drawer. I've heard of lots of people ending up putting theirs through the wash. Seems not to harm it but why leave it in your pants?

my goodness all that took like 1 minute! it has rebooted and fingers crossed videocalling still works?? (+ all the rest)

stevenz: 2.3.4 could turn up tomorrow, or it could be months away, or never turn up. Depends how patient you want to be.

According to @samfirmware, there won't be a 2.3.4 firmware for the SGS2 until next month.

ArtooDetoo: Odin flash, but my phone's an SGS 1, so maybe that's the reason I don't see it, or maybe Chainfire's root mods the kernel in a way that doesn't 'un-sign' it? Whichever, I don't have the yellow triangle on boot.

As others have mentioned, the yellow triangle was added to the boot screen on the SGS2, and indicates that you're using a kernel that hasn't come from Samsung. It only shows up if you flash a non-stock kernel using Odin, not if the kernel was flashed via Clockwork Mod (CWM). The triangle can be removed either using the jig, or by Odin-flashing a stock kernel then CWM-flashing a custom kernel.

Flashing a new kernel (and only the kernel) will not affect your data. The kernel is stored in a different part of the flash memory.

A kernel is only a small subset of an entire ROM. The kernel is the core OS, and is responsible for providing basic functionality needed by other apps. The rest of the ROM contains things like the user interface, the applications, etc.

Chainfire only provides modified kernels. These kernels will root your device, and will put on a few root-related system apps (CWM Manager, SuperUser, busybox). No other part of the system is touched.

Lite'ning ROM is a complete firmware package. It contains a custom kernel (looks like Chainfire's one), a new UI theme, and has some removed apps. Anyone looking at it will instantly be able to tell it's not the default Vodafone firmware, so it's probably not really what you're looking for.
