I really want to flash 2.3 to my Galaxy 3, I've given up on useless vodafone because they wont authorise the upgrade to 2.2.

How do I make a backup for the firmware I have now? i can't find it online anywhere, its a custom Vodafone one I'm assuming.

Also, do I need to root the phone before flashing it? No guides I've read say you do.

And if it doesnt go as planed, how can I roll back?

You can use titanium backup/nandroid backup to backup your apps and ROM before flashing.

Flashing a custom ROM requires a custom recovery (such as clockworkmod/amora/etc) which usually require root + a hack to get the recovery on there.

If it goes tits up, as long as you have the custom recovery you can usually get a ROM back in there.

Have you looked for custom ROMS for your phone and a way to root/custom recoveyr it?

Yeh I read on XDA that you can use z4root or whatever it was to root my phone. Didnt hear about titanium backup but I'll deffo try that. And yeh their's quite a lot of roms on XDA as well for my phone. I'll get back to you later of what ones look best. Do you have any recommendations?

Can't say sorry, if there's a CM7 port out for your phone, definetly try that.

I read through the forums on XDA and a LOT of people were saying they lost their IMEI after flashing. I don't think I wan't to take that risk. Not until I've researched a lot more into it. The idea of putting a different theme on my phone sounds good to me though. Whats the easiest way of doing that? Guides I've read say you have to replace framework in the root of the OS. I can just make a copy of that can't I and replace it later should I have to? And is there a program that does this for me?
