I'm looking at getting a new phone (replacing Nokia 5800) and am budgeting for around $800.

I definitely want to go Android but not sure which handset, any ideas??

I'm thinking the Samsung Galaxy S is the way to go (fits the budget). Any other thoughts / ideas are welcomed

Ideos X5? It is cheaper but goes awesome. The only slight issue is that the battery only lasts a day of heavy use but that is normal for most smart phones.

I was pretty much sold on the Ideos X5, but then stumbled across the Samsung Galaxy and assumed that it was better.

Might have to look again at the ideos if people recommend it

The SGS is better, but it depends what is important to you. If good GPS performance matters to you, for example, then the X5 would probably be a better choice.

Motorola Defy, From what I have used it for, I would rank it one of the best Droids in your price bracket

Edit: Just read you are on 2degrees, I think the Telecom Version is Quadband? if not a few of the parallel import shops sell the 900mhz version

If you're looking at the ideos X5 then you could take a look at the galaxy ace - similar specs to the X5 - the ace is $599 contract free from vodafone.

The galaxy S has a fantastic screen and those that I know that have it love it - despite it's little issues.

There are some reviews on my youtube channel but they are mainly budget devices the defy is there however.

If you interested in importing the Desire hd is a awesome phone, best phone i have ever had, the desire s, would also be in your price range if you wanted something smaller.

Dude for $800 you can get a lot of high end phones especially if you buy it online. Check out pricespy.co.nz. I think you can get a dual core LG Optimus 2X for less than $800.

Sign the 2D $129/mth plan on 24mth term to get the Optimus 2X for $250, and either pay early transfer fee or early termination fee, either way you get a great phone for a great price without any of the parallel imported goods potential issues

I don't to get into an argument but if he has $800 there is no good reason to go on an expensive contract, especially if his usage is not going to be that high. There is nothing wrong with buying parallel imported goods. I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S from overseas long before they even came out here and got it cheaper. I have had zero issues. I got my little brother to purchase a Galaxy S from Eking and he had no issues with them. They happen to have the LG Optimus 2X for a very reasonable price of $628 + $30 shipping.

I to have had no trouble with importing. I got my DHD from Clove had no issues (also got a parallel Samsung Jet no issues) Is much cheaper and phones much newer than our service providers can offer.

Galaxy S would be my choice (but then I'm biased - I used to own one). In my opinion a great phone with 3 faults - poor GPS reception, no flash on camera and annoying lag. I believe there are plenty of solutions out there for the lag (and maybe Samsung have it fixed in the imminent 2.3 upgrade) but the other 2 you are stuck with. The screen is the best reason to get it however - do a side by side comparison with an LCD and see what I mean.

I can see this turning into a discussion about (parallel) importing, I got my nokia 5800 parallel imported and had no issues, so unless someone can convince me otherwise, I'll probably do it again.

Yeah worked for me as well, via Clove UK and Galaxy S II as well as HTC Desire. Good luck, I think you will enjoy Android.

As I said in another thread, I just bought the Optimus 2x from eking. Think it was $660 landed and shipping took about 4 days from China. Pretty stoked with the whole deal.
