The HTC Sensation (or any quad-band GSM phone) will work as a GSM phone with any GSM provider. No worries there.

The issue is the 3G data coverage. For Telstra, you'd have two frequencies to work on....but for Vodafone, you'd only have one (2100MHz).

Vodafone has fairly good 2100MHz coverage (in NZ) as they were selling iPhones for 3 years that could ONLY do 3G data on 2100MHz on their networks......That was because iPhone 3 and 3GS could only do 3G on 850MHz and 2100MHz. They didn't use VFNZ's 900MHz Extended 3G coverage at all.

So VFNZ had to beef up their 2100MHz 3G coverage to keep the iPhone users as happy as possible.

The main issue is VFNZ phones trying to work on Telecom XT - which doesn't do GSM at all. (Telstra may be the same). So you're hanging ALL your connectivity on a single frequency: 2100MHz 3G (actually WCDMA/UMTS, but I'm trying to avoid alphabet soup).

Not quite right anyway....IIRC

You can root the stock firmware without needing access to the bootloader...but lack of access to the bootloader means you can't flash different firmware on the phone or install a different recovery image with extra tools.

For example, people on XDA worked out how to root the Nexus One without unlocking the bootloader....but they couldn't flash a different ROM on the phone.

Foo: Without wanting to sound stupid, why are people ordering this from overseas?

Is it not available in NZ in the moment? I thought that it was available for $869 NZ from some NZ suppliers (even if it is parallel imported). That includes a one year warranty.

How much does it cost buying from somewhere like Clove - I note it is 415 pounds (excl. VAT), which equates to approx $820 NZ. Add on GST and you're looking at $940 (excluding the credit card currency conversion costs of approx 2.5%).

I'm guessing that the $869 NZ is not the full NZ price or they're 'currently unavailable' and will be for some time?

I think if you want the Vodafone flavour you have to import it.

Well, I don't intend to use Telecom, so I guess I would want to Vodafone/2degrees flavour.

I also note that the bootloader is likely to be unlocked in a future OTA update.

But the problem is if you import a phone to operate on the VF network you wont be able to (easily) get an OTA update.

Actually if you import an unlocked one you are MORE likely to get an OTA update, and quicker, since you won't have to wait for VF or whichever carrier you're with to, ahem, 'optimise' it.

I guess it all depends on where the imported phone originates from?... my experience with an HTC Desire from Telstra was not good waiting for the update from Eclair to Froyo?

PS... and it was chock full of crapware

Telecom hasnt been too bad the last couple of years and not overly customised their handsets with bloatware. Telstra on the other hand, traditionally fill their handsets with lots of unecessary bloatware. The Telstra Touch Pro2 i bought was loaded with rubbish which I rid by loading a generic ROM. The Captivate i bought last year was also filled with rubbish by AT & T. Easily rid via rooting and then having both read and write access to remove the rogue apps.

As per NZTechfreak, updates for non branded/carrier provided handsets will nearly always be available to users much earlier.

Which is why if you are going to import one, Clove is a good idea as they are pure unbranded.

Your phone and phone in this thread is different. Their phones afaik do not have final software yet

If you're referring to the ones from Telecom, we were told they did have the final software on them.

They certainly are stable. I have no complaints about the stock load after 3 days of using it. Solid as a rock so far.

I bought a Desire from au (branded Telstra as well)... It had a few specific shortcuts and some bookmarks, but I would in no way class it as "full of crapware"

I did however root it and replace with a custom ROM because I wanted a plain vanilla Desire.
