So, going back to mid-November (p.73 on this thread) I was having trouble with the security certificate when trying to connect to email. This kind of went away by itself, but now the problem is back. To recap, I get the following message when trying to synch with my Sensation (with standard ROM) with my Xtra email account:

   Security warning
There are problems with the security certificate for this site.
This certificate is not from a trusted authority.
   [Continue] [View] [Cancel]

I only get the message when synching the Xtra account – synching with Gmail, or any other type of account (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) is fine. If I view the certificate details it says:

This certificate is not from a trusted authority.
   Issued to:
Common name: VeriSign Class 3 Public Primary Certification Authority – G5
      Organization: VeriSign Inc.
      Organizational unit: VeriSign Trust Network
   Issued by:
      Common name:
      Organization: VeriSign Inc.
Organizational unit: VeriSign Class 3 Public Primary Certification Authority
   Validity:
      Issued on: 2006-11-08 13:00:00+1300
      Expires on: 2021-11-08 12:59:59+1300

I wondered whether the blank “common name” in the certificate details is the reason it appears to not be from a “trusted authority”, but that seems too obvious.

At my local suburban Telecom store on the weekend, a guy thought the solution was to delete the Xtra account and add it again. I deleted it but can't add it at all now because I get the warning message as soon as I enter the email address and password.

Can anyone give me a beginners guide to these security certificates? My initial thought was that it’s something at the Telecom end that my phone checks when trying to connect. But if that was the case, surely everybody with an Xtra account would be getting this error. And then, if it’s something at the phone end, why isn’t everyone with the standard ROM getting this error?

Any information or ideas would be gratefully appreciated. BadCam previously suggested resetting the phone. think this will help? I’m prepared to try pretty much anything at this point – my phone has been my primary means of accessing my email for the last few weeks so this is really frustrating.

Just an update to my novella above...

I have got it working by adding the account, then in the Incoming settings I changed the Security type setting from SSL to none. This also changed the Server port number from 995 to 110. I left the Outgoing settings Security type at SSL.

While it does work, I don't feel too comfortable operating with the security type off, so still hoping for some suggestions that will fix this problem.

More of a FYI... I was so excited when I checked for a System Update for the Stock ROM this morning and it went 'beep' one available... thought it was ICS but no.

System Software Update: HTC Twitter Client 6.74mb

Android version: 2.3.4
HTC Sense: 3.0
Software number: 1.50.781.1

LOL.

The latest on the security certificate warning message saga - received this from Telecom...

Thank you for your email.

We have discovered an issue with some particular models of phones connecting to Yahoo!Xtra email which is causing the error message you quoted. This has been raised to the Telecom product manager for these phones. The latest update is that the manufacturer will provide an 'over-the-air' firmware update for the HTC Sensation. This means that you won't have to do anything, the update will take care of itself.

We don't have an exact ETA at this time, but in the meantime you can try the following settings. They should work for now:
-Incoming Mail Server: pop3.xtra.co.nz
- Require SSL: NO
- Port: 110

If you have any further enquiries please don't hesitate to reply.

Doesn't this say that everybody with a Sensation and an Xtra email address would be having this problem? And yet Telecom retail store staff knew nothing about it. Either I'm the first person to complain, or someone isn't sending out the technical bulletins...

I am borrowing a Sensation at the moment but don't use Xtra Mail so can't comment on your problem but have you tried using IMAP instead? I am sure Xtra mail servers support IMAP and that might be a better solution anyway.

My father-in-law is having this exact issue and has had it on/off since before Christmas. Telecom told him they were aware of the problem, and were working on it but had no time frame. He was getting pretty frustrated, I think it was working again yesterday but it had been a week or so since it had last worked.

I can't find anything regarding ice cream sandwich updates on Telecom XT website, are they going to update their phones? Have they said?

I'd say it is highly unlikely and if it does happen it won't be for many months after the official release.

Why is that do you think?

Maybe because of the Telecom customisations? Actually I have been using the Sensation for about a week as a loaner phone and I could only see two Telecom apps on the phone so they are unlikely to be customisations but just additional apps. Unless they are embedded into the ROM, they should not pose a difficulty to getting ICS.

As an aside I am using the Sensation on 2D (I won't go into the reasons why). In the Wellington CBD and burbs I usually see H when I am on 3G and occasionally E (Edge I guess). When I am on H I presume I am on 2D 900 HSPDA. Not entirely sure what is happening when I am on Edge.

They take their time when going through their modification and testing process

This is one of those frowned-upon cross-posts, but I was wondering if any of the hundreds of followers of this thread have a helpful thought for me here:

It's been a few minutes since my last post Father, so here's my confession.

I've updated to a ROM based on the official release that was leaked a week or so back and it seems to be the biz. There are many modded ROMs about the place and a few that are stock so if you want to put ICS on your Sensation now, there's a whole lot of options.

I can honestly say my Sensation has never run better and this combo feels like a good smartphone OS should. Won't bore you all with platitudes and gushing, so I'll simply say that it feels like a completely new phone. Brilliant.

Besides the slickness of the OS, the performance is outstanding. Check out the Vellamo benchie attached.

So it's a no-brainer really.

Cheers,
R2

Galaxy S has gone to its new owner. HTC Sensation has gone to its new
owner. Galaxy S3 has gone to its new owner. Now using Galaxy Note 3. Skipping Note 4 I think...

Which ROM are you using? I had a look on XDA about a week back but most of them were based on releases from other phones. I was going to install the miui b4 but it looks pretty buggy as is.
