So what apps do you guys use for screen shots? I'm having issues getting any to work properly.

If you root your phone, you have several to choose from: Drocap2, Screenshot It

If you don't root your phone, the options are more limited. There is one ("No Root Screenshot") that you can enable while connected to your PC then you disconnect and it lets you take screenshots until you re-boot your phone. A sort of non-persistent root.

On an un-rooted phone, I generally just set up the Android SDK on Ubuntu and connect the phone and do screen captures on the PC. It works well.

Oh wait... Android huh... oops (deleted desktop oriented reply)

+1 for the SDK on Linux. Potentially not what you are looking for though?

16GB Class 10 MicroSDs at PB Tech are about $65?

They also have very reasonable prices for 32GB Class 10, but my USB-based flash card readers don't do 32GB, so I haven't bought one. But tempted....

It seems odd that with Apple it's just a keypress, with Android you need to root it and install an app.

I read some where that from 2.3.3 on you don't need root. Just an app.

not sure if I don't understand the concern here but there is a short cut for taking a screen shot right out - home + power button (at least that's how it works on the sgs2)

no need to root or add any app...

I have heard of a certain Samsung that does that. But no sign of it happening on my Desire

SGS and SGSII are special cases - Samsung added that functionality, its not native to Android and won't work on anything else. For everything else you need Root or to use the SDK method.
