avecha: Is there any reason why the phone is only available on contract when it's released?

$$$$$$

Same as the the iPhone. If a product is expected to be in high demand a company will leverage that to maximise their return. If you have to have this device and can't source it 'handset only' you will have to go on contract.

If it's only available on contract in NZ, then I'll order from clove or mobicity

Auckland - 4 May 2012 - Vodafone New Zealand will offer the much-anticipated third generation Samsung GALAXY S smartphone – the Samsung GALAXY S III – this month, available on its attractive Smart and Smart Data plans.

That sucks. My S2 wasn't contract when they were released.

Chances are it will be priced like the Note was initially. From memory that was $1200 (?)

So $1200 for the SGSIII 32GB and maybe $1350 for the 64GB one? If that pricing looks familiar check out VFs iPhone pricing.

Your S2 arrived via VF, Months after it's release date. It's somewhat of a change of policy for VF to have new handsets available on release date.

Agreed - I remember buying my S2 from JB Hifi on June 14th, which was pretty much the first day you could get them in Dunedin, and that was still a month or more after Europe got them.

So if i was to buy an unlocked one through Clove or Mobicity, is there anything it can or cant do in NZ. Like would some features not work etc?

Nope - unlocked means the firmware isn't provider-specific, or branded in any way.  Pop your SIM in, set up your APN's and you're away.

Does it become more difficult to upgrade the firmware?
Just trying to decide on the better option - buying unlocked or just getting the cheapest contract option.

Unbranded handsets generally get updates quicker, especially if they're from EU.

Yes I have purchased from Mobicity with no issues, as have many people. Be prepared to pay tax. I haven't had to yet, but then I was just fortunate.

Yeah, i was just reading up on that. Buying from Clove with a leather case added on is still cheaper then Mobicity.

I'm getting around 550 GBP ($1120) from clove vs $999 from mobicity ($1150 incl tax) & incl shipping
With the chance of customs tax from clove vs 15% from mobicity
It maybe slightly cheaper from clove, but the risk doesn't equal the $30

What do you guys think?

I see 429 on Clove, 412 on Handtec in Pounds. Where are you getting your 550?
