Whats the store you purchased it from? If DSE, I believe theirs are actually parallel imported, even though they aren't advertised as such. So far there hasn't been an update for at least some of them.

Have you tried it using Kies?

robfish: My update (from Telecom) went smoothly last night and the S3 seemed fine until about 4:30 pm when it made a couple of little noises then all I get is the Galaxy logo and model on a black screen and it will not boot up.
I cannot even get into recovery mode (Vol Up + Home + Power buttons)
Later when I put the SIM into an S2 I got a text "From Telecom: You should now be receiving a text(s) that will change your phone's settings. Save these settings using PIN: 1234 if needed."
Could the text be related to my now bricked phone?
