Unfortunately mine reads: " VTU00M ver 0xf1"

And its been rebooting itself every now and then. So time to look for the receipt and keep it handy. I got mine from 2 Degrees.

1. do we wait for Vodafone to issue a fix ota.  If so does anyone know how long before it arrives.

2. do we just go and apply the fix manually like some here have done.  If so would we still get OTA updates from Vodafone or forever have to manually update in future.

3. If we do manually update the fix and it is found the fix really isnt a fix, would it still be covered for sudden death

Hard questions!

1) You can, that's entirely up to you. As for when, how long is a piece of string? I would hope that if there's a further fix to come from Samsung (see below), that it'd be very soon (weeks, not months).

2) You can, that's entirely up to you. You may not get the next OTA update, it's very hard to know. I suspect you would if you do not have a rooted device. You can always flash the full firmware once it's released, and that will re-instate OTA updates.

3) In the majority of cases, people on XDA have had their devices fixed under warranty regardless of root or non-root status. Either way, if you just flash the kernel on a non-rooted phone, you'll still be stock, and there's no way of the repair agent telling, as in most cases, the device is so badly bricked that it won't even boot into download mode to check the phone status. Some people have reported that if they can, even on a stock phone, Download mode reports a blank device, and a custom status (as if rooted), so they can't really use that as an excuse to not repair.

Finally - it has been found that older kernels (back to LL4 at least) have signs of the fix being present (some strings were able to be searched for in the binary kernel) - so it's entirely possible that the fix is not a fix as you suggest, as there have been instances of people experiencing SDS on these older kernels.

So basically, not a definitive answer at this stage sorry!

mjb is pretty much up to date with what is happening so agree with his analysis.

If you monitor the near hysteria going on in XDA it can be very off putting so best to stay away from there and just go with the flow.

I have flashed the new kernel but no one is convinced that this combined with new recovery will 100% say you won't get it so I'm happy to just do the wait and see knowing if it happens I have a pretty good case to get it repaired/replaced under warranty/CGA.

Oh, I should add - if you're not running a late enough kernel to have what is believed to be the fix (if it is), then you definitely have no protection from SDS.

As mentioned above, this is LL4 or later. So, at this point in time, that's the stock Telecom firmware at least (Currently LK1). I'm not aware of what level the Vodafone or 2degrees kernels are at.

LK1 is also the latest 2Degrees version.

My phone has been as slow as slow lately, for which I blamed jellybean. Then this morning it started doing random reboots. It's day 220 for me and there is clearly something going wrong. I no longer have a backup phone so am just crossing fingers and waiting patiently.

Sadly, I think you'll both end up with bricked devices well before a fix appears. Going by others on XDA, you have days remaining before they fail to boot at all - if that.

Find your receipts, and be ready to head into your place of purchase :(

And when you backup don't forget your keepass.kdb file, you can't have too many backup copies of that I reckon.

I'm running LLA from UK. Is there a later firmware update than this (I like to keep things as up to date as I can). Also is there a counter on the phone that shows number if days running, you guys seem fairly accurate in your days running or you keep a count from day 1.  Thanks

LLC was released a day or two ago, not sure for which region sorry - I think it was UK as well.

for day calculations, go from your purchase date, and use something like http://www.timeanddate.com/date/duration.html
