GeoffisPure: John thanks for this information, I've found it really helpful. Now to wait for the price of mobile data to come down....

Sorry what has this got to do with getting a SGII connected to WiFi on a laptop?

Huh? I'm thanking you for your instruction, which sounds very useful.  Though, I worry that using my laptop on a mobile network would chew through a lot more data (which is currently expensive) than if I were simply using my phone.  My comment had no relation to your employment.

I have already tried the USB tether - that's why I asked how to do it.
I have the usb cable plugged into my laptop and phone.
I have selected USB tethering on my phone.
Nothing happens.
Drivers For Free program scan shows all my drivers are up-to-date.
Help!!!! Thanks

Try using different USB ports on the laptop. I found that a couple of ports on my laptop for some reason or another just plain do not work when tethering.

If the above didn't work for you, try the app PdaNet or EasyTether. Works for me every time, and in all operating systems. The only limitation though is that the free versions do not allow browsing secure sites (https), but you can purchase the paid version if the free one works great for you.
