Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008 (SBS 2008) Released to Manufacturing

Microsoft have made the announcement today that Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008 (SBS 2008) has been released to manufacturing (in both Standard and Premium versions). This is a few weeks ahead of the date that many were expecting with the official launch date having recently been announced as 12 November 2008.

This version of SBS requires a 64-bit AMD or Intel CPU for the main server (SBS Standard runs on a single, SBS Premium can run across two servers). As SBS is operating on top of the 64-bt version of Windows Server 2008 it supports hardware virtualisation via Hyper-V.

From the time we've spent testing Windows SBS 2008 it certainly looks like the most solid and robust SBS release to date. As I've mentioned previously with this release ISA Server will be dropped from SBS, so for organisations wishing to keep using ISA Server I recommended purchasing SBS Premimum 2003 now, along with Software Assurance to ensure you receive a free license for ISA Server and a free Windows Server license. It should be noted that ISA Server (and it's replacement Forefront Threat Management Gateway) will need to be run on a seperate server.

Also expected soon is the release of Microsoft Essential Business Server 2008. I expect to post an update on that shortly.

Points highlighted on the SBS 2008 blog about this release:

For IT managers and technology consultants:
·      Microsoft’s newest server technologies: Powerful and more secure infrastructure that was rebuilt from the ground up.
·      IT made easy:  Deployment, setup and administration is dramatically simplified and improved.  New tools to manage domain names and data folders.  New single CALs make SBS 2008 licensing more flexible and cost-effective.
·      Improved Manageability: Monitoring across both servers and client PCs.  Customizable, remotely-accessible reports via e-mail and mobile devices
·      Application Platform:  SBS 2008 Premium Edition is an ideal platform for critical business applications, via SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 on a second hardware server

For small business owners and employees:
·      Greater security: Trial subscriptions to Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server and Windows Live OneCare for Server.  Extensibility model for easy reporting of 3rd party protection applications.
·      Better data protection:  New block-based server protection technologies that can complete backing up your server in minutes rather than hours.
·      Simple, easy online marketing and commerce: Integration with Microsoft Office Live Small Business
·      Better productivity:  Improved Remote Web Workplace, integration of the new SharePoint and support for the newest Windows Mobile devices
