Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger Review

Posted on 4-JAN-2007 13:59 by M Freitas. | Tags Filed under: Reviews.

I am a fan of mobile chargers and it was great to receive a Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger to test. This is a must have for a mobile user - and while it won't charge a laptop, it will keep most of your USB-powered devices ready for action.

When comparing the Proporta USB Mobile Device with the Socket Mobile Power Pack I have here it is easy to see how small and light it is. The charger measures just 100 x 62 x 15mm (3.9 x 2.4 x 0.6 inches) and weighs 120g (4.2 oz). But even on such a small package it stores 3400 mAH storage and outputs 5v (700mA).

This means a fully charged Proporta USB Mobile Device can store enough to recharge an average device multiple times, and with a couple of my Pocket PCs I manage to get up to three charges out of the Proporta.

The slogan for this device should be "Charge anywhere, recharge anywhere", since you can recharge the battery from a USB port, just like any other device using USB power. This is very convenient because you can keep it recharged from your desktop or laptop, and it is small enough to fit any case or pack and go with you. This is also another big difference when compared with the Socket Mobile Power Pack, which can only be charged from the wall.

I have tested it with a USB car charger and a USB wall charger and it recharged as well as it would from the laptop. Very pleasing. Proporta can actually supply bundles with these other devices to create a "survival kit" for road warriors.

In the box you will find the Proporta USB Mobile Device Charger, a manual, plus a retractable cable and the following inter-changeable connector heads: 2 x Nokia, 1 x Sony Ericsson, 1 x Mini USB, 1 x iPod. Strangely there is no connector head for Palm devices.

A small LED indicates when the device is charging, full or empty. The led is also the button that starts the charging process.

Pros
  • Small and light
  • Looks good
  • Multiple chargers for other mobile devices
  • Quick recharge of the device itself

    Cons
  • No Palm connector head in the package

Sounds great, but can I buy one in NZ? If so, who is the reseller for it?

I found out these are available through Jaycar - not with the Proporta brand of course.

Indeed they where, different colour casing. I'll try this out, so far does not work with the Nokia phone but seems ok with the JasJar (which is it's main purpose).

"Strangely there is no connector head for Palm devices."

Actually there are 2 types of connector heads for Palm devices. And some more, e.g. my old Sony Ericsson, and Dell Axim, Motorola are also on the list.
You can get one of these heads free of charge when ordering the charger from proporta.com webshop. Click here to check the available heads, and the compatibility list.
