Working fine for me too at the moment (xnet) but that may not be the case soon. Wikipedia is currently displaying the banner below (obviously changes with time) indicating a blackout for English Wikipedia.

Wikipedia banner

Clicking on the banner in Wikipedia takes you you to the site linked above. It's slated to be a 24 hour blackout, so those who rely on Wikipedia to post information here may feel a little angst Wink

If there is to be a coordinated blackout, I would expect other sites to go out at the same time but currently neither Facebook nor Google (two sites specifically mentioned in the related slashgear article) are displaying any such intention.

EDIT: Slightly re-worded and added captured image..doh...

Going a bit off topic here, but could somebody please tell me what this SOPA thing is all about? I tried reading about it but I got lost with all the big words. I read somewhere "It will be the end of bloggers".

In english and a maximum of a few sentences would be great :D

Or maybe you could just try clicking on the link I posted?

The linked article is relatively succint and contains links to further reading should you wish to go down that track.

Read it before the Blackout begins...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act

If you just want the quick plain english description, skip to the second paragraph:

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), also known as House Bill 3261 or H.R. 3261, is a bill that was introduced in the United States House of Representatives on October 26, 2011, by House Judiciary Committee Chair Representative Lamar S. Smith (R-TX) and a bipartisan group of 12 initial co-sponsors. The bill, if made law, would expand the ability of U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods.[2] Presented to the House Judiciary Committee, it builds on the similar PRO-IP Act of 2008 and the corresponding Senate bill, the PROTECT IP Act.[3]

The originally proposed bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement. Depending on who makes the request, the court order could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators from doing business with the allegedly infringing website, barring search engines from linking to such sites, and requiring Internet service providers to block access to such sites.

Good, so it was down for maintenance. They have thousands of servers, perhaps the one specific server that would process your login request was down. Try again later.

cws82us: and then i read this

Completely unrelated, as the Facebook page already told you it was some maintenance.

cws82us: So is facebook getting hacked?

No, it's undergoing planned maintenance.
