As I have just joined here in the search for info on faster broadband...namely fibre to the home... it made me think more about what I was after...its really to get alot faster download of course but also much faster upload speeds....eg to upload YouTube videos... A high download speed just makes us passive users of the entertainmant etc from overseas....while a really fast upload speed makes us able to export digital info/content/products...
aka  Digital Exporting

The "light" went on yesterday...digital exporting....is what that amounts to!!!!! It places New Zealand right next door to the markets overseas that have always been "way over there"...thousands of miles away... the long referred to "tyranny of distance" New Zealand has had around its neck fades away....

Digital Exporting is now one area where we are so close and with UFB aka fibre to the home/business etc...we can compete from "Home" here in New Zealand...no longer do we have to move overseas to get there to do the work etc...

I believe this is a great and relevant term we should be using now.....Digital Exporting

UFB is a once in a generation domestic infrastructure upgrade. Think power lines, water pipes, waste water pipes, roads, railway, the original copper phone network.... but it only directly improves the last mile, ie: from your premises to the local aggregation point (formerly known as the regional telephone exchange).

You may need to temper your expectations because:

Data has still go to get from that poing to your ISP (domestic backhaul) and from your ISP to the rest of the internet (domestic peering and domestic and international transit). The UFB doesn't directly improve those it's up to the ISP who will only provision those at contention/congestion ratios that are profitable given the price points consumers and businesses are willing to pay.

Also latency will continue to cap the maximum throughput of single threaded tcp/ip connections both download and upload, expectations of super throughput to/from overseas servers are unlikely to be realized. The other end is unlikely to have a large pipe back to NZ either.

Companies like Trademe focusing on the domestic market will still host in local data centers  companies like Xero focusing domestic + global will still host their servers/services in the US or Europe.

Sorry faster upload to Youtube isn't going to improve the NZ balance of trade deficit.

Don't get me wrong, I think UFB is a needed important infrastructure upgrade and will improve connectivity for the majority of NZ but it doesn't do magically do what you're claiming eg: make us closer to overseas markets (they are still 150+ ms away, ye canne change the laws of physics Jim).

Jim thanks for the info and yes YouTube was just an example and faster uploads may not do much for our balance of payments...but the faster upload ability is what I was getting at....which can do this for New Zealand...it does bring us closer to overseas markets in making our digital products much easier and faster to deliver....especially compared to physical ones which take for example 24-25 hours to get to London by air....

Making the NZ section faster is going to enable us to do this and or take advantage of this technology to NZ's advantage ..it makes us alot closer as I said...

We cant bend the laws of physics currently but we can certainly make them work to our advantage in the digital world...

On a voluntary basis and very small scale I have been doing this for about 5 years now.... currently with my PS3 and Folding at Home.. I am being given data to work on and then am exporting the results back... small scale I know but its a start and does show it can be done...

I do also recall a story several years (10??)  ago about a company out Henderson way complaining about not being able to get a then high speed connection via Telecom NZ...they were some type of graphics company that did the work there and exported the results/product back over seas.... This would be a more relevant example for a digital product needing high speed internet to export their digital work...Digital Exporting...

I will start another thread about YouTube uploads if there isnt one currently as from a users point of view how fast you can do so is a valid measure in a practicle sence (not getting technical) for what the likes of wireless/adsl/vdsl/fibre can do...

Really looks like you're trying to coin a buzzword, but UFB is really just a last mile upgrade. It's been a LONG TIME since almost anyone couldn't actually get a fast upstream (at least in UFB coverage areas)... What is happening now is that over the next few years this quick upstream is being made available to residential users on a mass market basis.

Anyone that has actually needed fast upstream hasn't been without options. We're now getting it extended to people who I personally doubt are going to use it for anything that contributes to the economy in NZ.

I believe your expectations (like many) are way too high for UFB. I'm more excited by the explosion in data caps from virtually all providers in the last 12 months. Unless someone wants unlimited for $50/month then there's little to complain about anymore.

Down in Hamilton....its good to see what I am saying actually being true in a practicle sence..... they moved from adsl2 to fibre and did get the Digital Exporting to speed up as required for their customers overseas

Ah that one always gets trotted out for UFB, Truth is options have been around for a number of years to companies like this but they have costed more than a few hundy
