We got a new LCD TV to celebrate moving into our house (and because we only had my 20-year old Panasonic 14" to use), which is working out great.

I also have an LG dvd/video player, and absolutely cannot get any of our VHS tapes to play consistently on it.

Every 5 seconds of video or so I get what looks like sound lines crawling up the page, which trolleys the video and sound. It then restores to normal, and resumes again.

In the old world I would have adjusted the 'tracking', but there's no such thing on my machine.

It's not the tapes - it happens with all 40 or so. (they are kid's tapes, I'd rather not have to replace them with DVD's).

Machine is plugged into TV, Composite and Component (DVD) inputs.

I'm lost - does anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried a different TV ? What happens when you record to VHS and play it back  ?
Could it have something to do with SP or LP mode on the video (if it has it)

I am sure more will add to this.

Are the component and composite outputs from the player plugged into different AV inputs on the TV? It's unlikely that the player will be able to send the VHS output via component but if you've got both component and composite cables going into the same AV input channel on the TV it will cause problems.

Can you get a picture from the VCR tuner at all?

The same experience happens on my 14" tv.

Recording VHS tapes and playing them back is fine - no issue.

The component and AV leads are going into seperate inputs, and are a seperate source on the TV.

I had thought maybe all the tapes had been ruined somehow, but they've played back fine on an older video we had (it stopped working, hence the move to the LG).

And I can get picture from the tuner.

Very puzzling indeed, by the way what LG model is the Video/DVD player ?
And you have had no lines/bars watching normal TV through the TV and video tuners.

Are you sure there is no tracking control onthe LG as this seems the root cause of problem?

FYI, I had this same issue when I swapped last year to my Panasonic  DVD - VHS player
(which we decided on because of all existing kids videos).

Out of interest I adjust the tracking on my video by using channel up and down button while the video is playing.


Also I do not know if this is a issue with fragility of LCD's, but my daughter insists on putting her hand on the screen to steady herself when bending down to change channels.   (my 7y son only uses remote so no problem there)

 

The machine is an LG V8826W, sold by LVMartin a couple of years ago. Only came out of storage in february.

It definetly looks like soundlines - but it's consistent every x seconds, suggesting some circuitry is seeing a pattern it doesn't like. Hence why I though Macrovision was the problem.

Did adjusting the 'tracking' fix the problem, or only alleviate?

Oops - I meant to say on my last post that changing the tracking allieviated the problem say 80% but not 100%

And I made mistake - it was Samsung rather than panasonic

You mention Macrovision..Not all your videos will have macrovision unless you have 40 odd Disney videos.
Not all film studio put macrovision on their VHS tapes. (costs money)
If it was a Macrovision problem (AGC) I think you should get a Black and white picture as well.
Have you tried giving it a good Thump sometimes that helps

Did you get the problem sorted out in the end ?

it seemed to clear up, which was an original suspicion of mine: the 'video doctor' part of the machine had kicked in, and was cleaning off the crud from my kids tapes. Took a lot of plays of a lot of tapes but it all seems good now.
