Looks great, congrats to Phil @ Red Jungle for a good, clean design.

Can't wait to see GZ on the new server, and see the rest of the layout updated!

When I fist hit it just now I thought "oh no, it's going to be gloated' but I was very wrong, it's a really clean design and images are extremely minimal, I rather like it but maybe make the tabs a wee bit smaller as they use a lot of vertical screen estate,, they are currently monstrous on the small screen with weeny little text in then.

Its a start.

Personally, I don't care for about a site being 'bloated'...I generally don't browse from a mobile device, so I prefer a site that looks good (using graphics) but still reasonably fast to load.

Honestly I think the site still looks basic, and a little tired...but that said, I think the changes are a step in the right direction.

You obviously have not tried to browse facebook recently from anything less that a Quadcore 3GHz.

I have on a Athlon XP 2000+, and it's still faster than MySpace.

Anyway, back OT:
Hopefully it'll get these forums looking more 'clean', and less like a hybrid between new and old boards (and their features)

i like it i think, will need more time to get used to things. I don't really think GZ needs to be flashy, although given the people in charge of it and their experience in the industry I'm surprised it isn't!

Personally I'd like to see some more background work rather than interface.  Being able to refine searches would be good:  search by user, forum title, date range, etc, would be helpful.  And ordering results would be great too.

But first things first and the UI is a good start :)

THB, I liked the mockups Freitasm posted a shile back ALOT better. The top menu is very bloated and the font reminds me of Times New Roman *cringe*. Definately a step in the right direction tho.

I would have rathered have my autologin back first before a new look tho...

Its a pain logging in every time.

Hmm... a slight side effect is that lists are pushed over to the left...

There is still one VITAL thing missing that is present on just about every other forum...

-  When you come back after a few hours/days/whatever, there should be a way to see ALL UPDATED TOPICS you haven't caught up on since last time

-  NOT just a small window on the main page that once an updated topic scrolls off the bottom, you have missed it

-  YES I KNOW there is an RSS feed with the most recent updated topics, but who wants to bother with all that when it would be SO SIMPLE just to have more than one page of updated topics

-  Just about every other forum out there has this i.e. Page 1, Page 2, ... Page N of updated topics which you can work your way through and when you've seen all the ones you are interested in, MARK ALL AS READ and that's it, end of story until the next time

-  Such a common function on almost every other forum, but not this one.  WHY ???

But we have this function. Every time you come back to Geekzone all new threads and discussions with new replies are marked with .

Each individual forum is marked with the same  icon if there was any discussion within that has been updated.

This way you only have to follow the forums you want - better than visiting the frontpage only, and better than getting the single RSS feed.

And there's a "reset read flags" link in the menu after your profile links. This will reset all flags if you want.

Speaking of this what forum software is this actually using? Is it custom?

vBulletin > All - it has all of those features you mentioned + more. Pretty much every big forum runs it.

It is a custom software. There are lots of functionality here that doesn't exist anywhere else - friends, blogs, etc. And we don't have to worry about adding new features with fear that a new version would break things.

Hey guys, is there a mobile version of Geekzone?

If not, are there plans for one in the near future?

Currently there is a mobile version at www.geekzone.co.nz/mobile but doesn't include the forums.

Moving to a CSS only layout will allow us to more easily create a mobile version.

The new layout is good. Its refereshing to see a new images/design Laughing

I think I found a bug. When I go to my Friend's Status list page, I see there is some problem with friends who dont have a profile picture. Below is a screenshot :

There seems to be some __ added before the names of those who dont have profile pictures. May be the hyperlink is given for that 'space' too?
