Topic # 107670 16-Aug-2012 12:34 Send private message

I have a friend with a Vodafone supplied and branded HG556a dsl router.
Every 5-20 minutes it will drop the internet connection.

As far as I can tell it doesn't drop the dsl line connection, as the status page says it has been up for days.
I am connected by wifi with full signal strength and not moving around.

As an example of the problem:

I had a continuous ping going to the router and when it went Requesd Timed Out, other programs with connections up also died, for example an ssh connection died rather than timed out so i'm thinking the router must be somehow closing the connections.

I have done a factory reset and its now doing it less, but still happening.

I have a theory it is the wifi radio on the router restarting, but no evidence.

Router firmware V100R001C12B028

Anyone had anything similar?

Thanks for the firmware link, i'll give it a try.

I can confirm it is a wifi related, a pc connected via Ethernet cable doesn't have the problem (its continous pings keep going fine)

Have upgraded firmware to V100R001C12B037 and my fault is still occuring.

Reading through that forum link above, i think my problem is slightly different. Mine is related to wifi having stability problems.
It seems like the wifi on the router is perodically stalling/resetting itself.

I've tried every combination of settings:
Channel from 11 to 1: no difference. I did use insidder to see what other wifi networks are in range, not much.
Changed wifi country from NZ to AU: no difference
Tried WPA2/WAP TKIP&AES, and WPA2AES, and WPA1TKIP: all no difference
Tried open network, only difference was the speedtest is much more like is should be (with security enabled speedtest is pretty bad and bursty, open is 7mbps)

All through this i was 3 meters from the router, and running a continuous ping. I would get periods of a couple of minutes evey 5-10 min where no data would flow, not even ping the router.

The PC connected with ethernet cable worked perfectly through all this.

I did factory resets too.

I'm thinking its a faulty router, JohnR who can I talk to to get this replaced?
