Being on the Vodafone Voice mailing list, I occasionally get surveys about Vodafone. Most are dull and what you would expect from any customer satisfaction survey.

However, a few days ago I completed a survey about up and coming products and services. Some of you may already know about these but for those that don't I have shared them with you below. I don't believe this to be commercially sensitive information as the VF Voice panel is open to anyone and there was nothing mentioned about confidentiality before taking part in the survey.

The new "ideas" are:

Is this available on it's own at the moment?

This concept is in breach of the NAD numbering rules in New Zealand that state a local number can only be used in the LCA (local calling area) for which it is issued. It's the reason why a Vodafone At Home box can only be used in a fixed location and why VoIP providers such as VFX will only allocate you a number that corresponds to the LCA that your billing address is.

Could it be?! Vodafone, actually being sane?  Either of these would have to be the single biggest price reduction ever seen anywhere, surely.

The devil is in the detail I think. $1 per day is still $30 per month for maximum 15 mb per day (approx 450 MB). Is the data charged in 15 mb chunks? ie. you check your email and use 5 kilobytes but get charged $1....

$5 per day is $150 per month....

I wouldn't make a judgement on whether I would use the mobile broadband until I could see how it was charged...

Yes, but $1 per day is only $4 per month for using the data card once a weekend to grab some emails or ssh into a server from the side of the road, or $3 for checking your mails during a long weekend whilst camping away from the world, or....

The present alternative (other than $10/meg) is $40/month for a no-term data plan giving 200mb a month, whether you actually use it that month or not.

It's not for people regularly using data, it's for casual use (which presently costs $10/meg, or to be more dramatic, ten thousand dollars per gig).

all these options have too low data caps. this would be my dream>

3G Broadband
(usb modem or usb router need to be purchased seperately)
$
60/month
30GB a month. Speed lowered once data cap reached.

30GB a month.

This is MOBILE broadbad we are talking about, if you want to try to pull down 30 gig over mobile broadband, there is something wrong with you.

3g broadband is not just a MOBILE broadband offering; it's also intended to be used instead of a fixed connection - so yes, 30gb is reasonable.

Doesn't that sound similar to what TCL were planning with their mobile network in Tauranga?

The concept isn't in breach of NAD as Vodafone is deploying it in just the way you describe - a local number to be used in the LCA for which it is issued... we've been talking about this capability for a few years now (you walk into the house and your mobile senses that you're home and switches over to fixed line capability. Leave the house and the mobile becomes mobile again) so it should come as no surprise to find it on one of these lists.

What TelstraClear wanted was a breach of the NAD - customers were supposed to be able to leave Tauranga (which is an 07 region) and arrive in Wellington and still receive calls directed to their 07 number. Vodafone said it couldn't do that without getting all the parties to the NAD to agree. TelstraClear then pulled the plug on the project.

Are these "new "ideas"" real, or are they just suggestion by the OP? I hope they're real... $5 for 100MB a day is a really good deal IMHO. I'm currently subscribed to the 3GB plan for $79.95 (without contract) but I never go over 1GB a month. And the fixed line deal sounds great too! I hope these are all real....! And when will they be released?

Yes, you've been talking about it for a while - yet I bet you still won't say how far away such converged solutions are for us regular peoples Tongue out  (Well, as regular as I can be considering how close I live to Juha, as it's quite contageous...)

No, these are not suggestions by me. Vodafone presented these ideas to myself and other VF Voice panel members to gather their feedback.
