Telstraclear dont want to know or know about the problems im having with there cable connection.

I play games so I need a stable connection or there is no hit reg.

I play on ICONZ servers and I am getting routed through a doddgy hub but the guys at telstra dont seem to think there is a problem.

So by the looks of the graph, you're being channelled through a slower server (g1-926.u12.brh.telstraclear.net).

There's nothing much to do. Telstra can't just suddenly improve the ping time of a particular server, and I don't think that they would actually care about you too.

But in the end, your ping time is still pretty good (36ms, compared to my 45ms to the same server).

I'm in Auckland using a FS/128k broadband connection, on ADSL(1). What more could you expect?

Oh I am not disagreeing with. I actually think 36 ms is quite good since we don't know anythning else. For example as I wrote I am in Wellington - and I am using cable, not DSL. We have no idea of the OP's situation though. He could be on DSL and thus going through different routes.

But I certainly don't think the difference between 36ms and 20ms are that a big deal - unlike old days when I was getting 60ms on cable and everyone else getting things like 400ms on DSL. These is changed now so the advantage is quickly moving to experience, dexterityy instead of connection speed.

Yeah, I'm just an ordinary home user - I suck at games anyway (slow reaction times, compared to others which seem to be able to tap or click away 3 times faster than me).

But he said:
I play games so I need a stable connection or there is no hit reg.

So I think he really wanted an even faster connection, aligning with the other servers he was through.

He is on TCL cable by the way:

This is not a DNS problem. and it doesn't look like a local connection problem either.

The reason TCL can't help you is because it's very likely that there is no problem here at all to fix.

I think you'll find that "slow" host is actually just set to give a lower priority to ICMP packets (such as a ping or tracert) which will give you skewed results running a program such as PingPlotter. I get a ping time of ~30ms to the same server on TCL cable but both g1*.telstraclear.net routers do give some very high response times to ICMP requests when pingplotter (or any other program generating ICMP traffic) is run over an extended period of time. This is quite normal configuration for many key routers on the internet.

I would suggest if you want faster ping times that the only real solution would be to move to Auckland where you will probably be 5ms - 10ms closer to the server depending on your ISP.

Why do you say you are having problems?

Are you experiencing issues when you are playing games that lead you to suspect that there is a problem? Or did you look at that graph and deduce from that that there is a problem?

The graph is not showing that you have a problem. As sbiddle said, the intermediate traceroute times are pretty well meaningless. It is normal practice to give ICMP a low priority on routers so they can get on worth the business of routing packets. All that matters is the end-to-end time.

You are showing as having a RTT of 36ms on average. That's good. Anything less than about 50ms is fast enough to exceed usual human reflexes: i.e. it should should be more than good enough. The data you have posted does not show slow or erratic ping times to ICONZ---in fact it shows the contrary.

the reason why i say im having problem is that i can play on other servers and they play different eg when i play on iconz it takes an entire clip to get a kill whereas on gamearena servers in aussie i can get a few kills out of a clip when i do a trace to there servers none of the hops averages are higher than the destination.

OK, thanks. However, that may be an ICONZ problem rather than a TelstraClear problem. Do you have any friends in Christchurch who are with another ISP (other than TelstraClear or ICONZ) who experience the same effects---or who don't experience the same effects? In other words, is there some way to narrow down the likely problem area?
